The Uptown Collective – The Recap 4-7 to 4-12

By Led Black

April 7 – April 12

It’s crunch time folks! You only have until April 18th to donate to the Indiegogo campaign of Uptown’s very own Emmanuel “Dj Boy” Abreu. So if you haven’t hit the Contribute Now button yet, please do so right now. So here is the deal. Dj Boy was chosen to take part in the prestigious 360 Xochi Quetzal artist residency. In fact, Dj Boy was the only photographer chosen out of a total of 160 applicants. Dj Boy will spend the month of May traversing Mexico capturing it’s magic in much the same way he has done for Uptown in the last 4 years. While the residency provides room and board, airfare is not included. The funds will also go a long way in helping him properly gear up for the life-defining trip. Please spread some Uptown Love and support via the link below.

Do you know who Juan Rodriguez is? Juan Rodriguez, a mixed race man from Hispaniola, is New York City’s first immigrant arriving on the island of Mannahatta back in 1613. While he has a strip of Broadway in Uptown named after him, far too many people don’t know who he is. The good folks at Organic Magnetics aim to change that with their Indiegogo campaign to rewrite the history of NYC and ultimately this country.

Visual artists, singers, musicians, dancers, poets, theater groups, etc., in Washington Heights and Inwood are invited to participate in the 2014 Uptown Arts Stroll. Just in case you don’t know, the Uptown Arts Stroll is a month long celebration of the arts Uptown. Check out our site for more info.

We also posted some great pictures of the recent Kraftwerk concert at the United Palace courtesy of Robert Altman. Our Monday Mood Music selection featured the latest song from the multi-talented Rubi Rosa, One Question. In addition, we posted the latest video from wordsmith Charlie Cruz entitled Full Metal Jacket. By the way, yours truly makes a cameo appearance in the L Burnz directed video.

Our good friends at Nueva York released a recap video of their recent event at Dyckman Bar to celebrate the release of their Dominican York collection. Our financial contributor, Fabian Baez, provided a few insightful tips to stop impulse buying and help folks keep their financial house in order.
