The Uptown Collective – The Recap 4-21 to 4-26

By Led Black
April 28 – May 3
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of accompanying Edible Manhattan writer Marissa Finn on a Dominican Food Tour of Washington Heights and Inwood. The day began at Malecon for a traditional different breakfast and ended at Bizcocho de Colores, which is banging out some seriously delicious tres leches cake. Along the way, we stopped at my favorite Dominican Restaurant, El Lina, as well as the United Palace, the Little Red Lighthouse and a bunch of other great spots Uptown. Shout out to Marissa and Edible Manhattan for highlighting the Dominican culinary powerhouse that is Washington Heights and Inwood.
We also posted Piecing it Together, a short documentary about three Uptown moms with autistic sons and how that diagnosis has changed their lives. The poignant Piecing it Together was shot by Jose “Lozer” Alfonseca and edited by Jonathan “Audubon” Perez. By the way people, the month long celebration of the Arts Uptown that is the Uptown Arts Stroll kicks off on Thursday May 29th. Uptown luminaries Sandra Betancourt (NoMAA), Mino Lora (People’s Theatre Project) and David Gracia (WHIN Music Project) were recently on the Tiempo program on ABC to discuss the annual festivities with host Joe Torres.
This coming Thursday, May 8th at 7 p.m., please join me at Word Up Books as I interview local writer, Arlene Shulman, as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of her book, The Prizefighters: An Intimate Look at Champions. The always-funny Christina Bebeau penned an amusing and quirky post about her love of classic films with the apt title of Poorly Photoshopped Disembodied Heads Promising Technicolor Adventures.
In addition, we posted new music from Charlie Cruz featuring Eckz, entitled Dedicated. Donn Gee also has a new tune featuring GDA, AllWeTalkAboutIs. Our in-house financial expert, Fabian Baez, put together a handy list of simple steps to help tame the potentially ruinous credit card monster.
Kudos goes out to the good folks at The Insurgo Project for an incredible mixer and Pop Up Dinner at Vines On Pine and Rusty Mackerel on Monday, April 28th. The Insurgo Project is doing some important work, highlighting the importance of access to local, healthy food for high-need and under served communities such as our own.
