February 24 – March 1
Spread the good news folks, Uptown Collective stalwart, Art By Dj Boy, is going to Mexico. That’s right, Uptown’s hardest working photographer has been chosen to take part in the prestigious 360 Xochi Quetzal artist residency in Chapala, Mexico. For the entire month of May, Art By Dj Boy, will travel throughout Mexico taking pictures and expanding his horizons. While the residency pays for his airfare as well as providing a meager daily stipend, our friend could use some help to better enhance the experience. That is where you come in. Art By Dj Boy has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the trip. Please spread some Uptown Love and support via the link below. http://indiegogo.com/projects/a-visual-trip-to-mexico-by-emmanuel-dj-boy-abreu
Once again it’s on. State Senator Adriano Espaillat has announced that he would make a repeat attempt to defeat Representative Charles B. Rangel in June. In 2012, he nearly bested the 22-term Harlem Democrat, losing by less than 1,100 votes. This is going to be really interesting.
That’s right people, the one and only Reyna of MTV’s Washington Heights fame has just released her much-anticipated EP, Proud. Proud is a cool collection of 7 tracks written by Audubon and produced by Audubon, Eckz, Frankie P, and The Reason. So go to http://reynasaldana.com/ right now, download the EP and check out the growth of this talented young lady from the Heights.
To properly celebrate Dominican Independence Day, Washington Heights’ own Karen Rodriguez released an excellent cover of Aunque Me Cueste La Vida, which was popularized by Dominican singer Alberto Beltran. This week we also have new music from GTO featuring Kemmikal entitled, Indica. Lastly, the homie, Jay Wise has a new song alongside Blvd, Chaos and Roi Al, Champion.
Who knew you could find a taste of Paris in the Bronx? We did – that’s who. Thanks to our astute Bronx contributor, Jenni Ruiza, tracked down the owner of Bistro SK, which is belting out some awesome French cuisine in the BX. We ended the week and Black History Month with a simply incredible post by Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of the human rights giant Malcolm X. Ilyasah provides some keen insights into who her father really was and his profound love for Black people and all of humanity as well.
