Dichter Pharmacy re-opens, with a twist

The local neighborhood pharmacy is back with a bang, a menu and a slightly different, sweeter name: Dichter’s Pharmacy Soda Shoppe.
The new space on Broadway is just a few steps away from where his former haunt, which burned down just over a year ago, stood.
Owner Manny Ramírez signed the lease for the new space earlier this year.
The 1,500-square-foot space beckons not only with prescriptive balms and medicine cabinet supplies, but also now encourages visitors to sidle up onto one of its new chrome stools and lean upon the marble counter-top.
Folks used to seeing Ramírez merely work wonders behind the pharmaceutical counter will also have to get used to seeing behind him the front counter, taking egg cream orders.
Soda fountains were at their pinnacle in the 1940’s and 1950’s, and were an important fixture in many pharmacies. “My whole life I’ve wanted to have a restaurant or bar, and this seemed like a good fit,” said Ramírez at the new location’s opening day on Wed., May 1st.
Though soda fountains were at their height before Ramírez’s time, history has instilled in him a sense of nostalgia.
And the original Dichter’s Pharmacy actually had a soda fountain. “If you ask any pharmacist from my era, they’d always want a soda fountain. From what I understand, Inwood had a bunch,” said Ramírez, who will have to get used to fielding questions about the Soda Shoppe menu, as well as queries about dosages and insurance.
One of the most common new questions: What is an egg cream?
The name is misleading, as it has neither egg, nor cream, but an egg cream is a frothy beverage made with seltzer water, milk, and chocolate or vanilla syrup.

“When I lived east of Broadway, there was a soda shop until the mid-seventies,” he recalled.
Now he and the staff serve them up to curious customers.
“I bet more people have tried them [egg creams] in the past few hours than in the past few decades,” he said. Inger Tilsen-Preton, an Inwood resident who will be providing baked bread for the pharmacy, tried the silky concoction for the first time on Opening Day.
“It tastes a lot like cold hot chocolate, with a little oomph,” she said.
Dichter Pharmacy Soda Shoppe will also offer panini sandwiches and bagels.
In keeping with the classics, Ramírez also offers the classic New York bagel – which proved harder to get than a refill.
In his hunt for just the right bagel, Ramírez called ten different bagelries throughout the city—none of which delivered above 125th Street.
Four other places brought their bagels to Ramírez to sample—but the best bagel to fit the bill came from across the bridge in Teaneck, New Jersey.
In addition to the egg creams, the sandwiches and the bagels, the dessert options are also varied: ice cream, milk shakes and floats.
There are even three sundaes to choose from: “The Anti-Depressant,” “The Aphrodisiac,” and “The Pharmacist’s Choice.”
Those that come in the store on their birthday get a free birthday scoop.
“I might have to start checking i.d.’s,” chuckled Ramírez.

La farmacia local del vecindario está de vuelta con una explosión, un menú y un nombre más dulce, ligeramente diferente: de Farmacia Dichter a Soda Shoppe.
El nuevo espacio en Broadway se encuentra a pocos pasos de distancia de donde estaba su antiguo refugio, que se quemó hace poco más de un año.
El propietario, Manny Ramírez, firmó el contrato para el nuevo espacio a principios de este año.
El lugar de 1,500 metros cuadrados, ofrece no sólo señales de bálsamos prescriptivos y suministros de botiquín, ahora también anima a todos a acercarse furtivamente sobre uno de sus nuevos taburetes cromados y apoyar los codos sobre el mármol del mostrador.
La gente acostumbrada a ver a Ramírez solamente detrás del mostrador farmacéutico tendrá que acostumbrarse a verlo tomando pedidos de crema de huevo.
Las fuentes de soda estaban en su cima en los años 1940 y 1950, y eran a menudo un elemento importante en las farmacias.
“Toda mi vida había querido tener un restaurante o bar, y esto parecía una buena forma”, dijo Ramírez el día de la inauguración de la nueva ubicación, el miércoles 1 de mayo.
Aunque las fuentes de soda estaban en su apogeo antes de la época de Ramírez, la historia le ha inculcado un sentimiento de nostalgia, y la farmacia Dichter original, en realidad tenía una fuente de sodas.
“Si le preguntas a cualquier farmacéutico de mi época, siempre quieren fuente de sodas. Por lo que entiendo, Inwood tenía muchas”, dijo Ramírez, quien tendrá que acostumbrarse a responder a preguntas sobre el menú de Soda Shoppe, así como preguntas sobre las recetas y los seguros.
Una de las nuevas preguntas más frecuentes: ¿Qué es una crema de huevo? El nombre es engañoso ya que no tiene ni huevo, ni crema, pero una crema de huevo es una bebida espumosa elaborada con agua mineral, leche y jarabe de chocolate o vainilla.
Joe Dzinksi, quien creció en Inwood y ha estado trabajando en la farmacia Dichter durante años, ayudó a mostrar al personal cómo hacer una crema de huevo, que recuerda con cariño de su infancia.
“Cuando vivía al este de Broadway, existía una fuente de sodas, que estuvo hasta mediados de los años setenta”, recuerda.
Ahora, él y el personal les sirven a los clientes curiosos.
“Apuesto a que más gente ha probado las cremas de huevo en las últimas horas que en las últimas décadas”, dijo.
Inger Tilsen-Preton, un residente de Inwood que proveerá pan a la farmacia, probó una crema de huevo por vez primera en el día de la inauguración.
“Tiene un sabor muy parecido al chocolate caliente en frío, con un poco de entusiasmo”, dijo.
La Soda Shoppe de la farmacia Dichter también ofrecerá sándwiches y bagels.
De acuerdo con los clásicos, Ramírez también ofrece el clásico Bagel New York, que resultó ser más difícil de obtener que una receta.
En su búsqueda del clásico panecillo, Ramírez llamó a diez productores de bagels diferentes en toda la ciudad, ninguno de los cuales entregaba arriba de la calle 125.
Otros cuatro lugares llevaron bagels de prueba a Ramírez, pero el mejor panecillo llegó del otro lado del puente en Teaneck, Nueva Jersey.
Además de las cremas de huevo, los bocadillos y las rosquillas, las opciones de postre son también variadas: helados, malteadas y flotantes.
Incluso hay tres helados para elegir: “El antidepresivo”, “El afrodisíaco” y “la opción del farmacéutico”.
Los que vienen a la tienda en su cumpleaños disfrutan de una bola de cumpleaños gratis. “Voy a tener que empezar a revisar identificaciones”, se rió entre dientes Ramírez.
