As New Yorkers spend their winter bundling up under layers of clothing, a local comedy-pop musical duo is looking to take it off.
The Skivvies present bare-bones versions of famous pop hits, as well as quirky original songs, primarily using cello, ukulele, glockenspiel and melodica.
Not only do they strip down the music, the group literally strips down to their underwear to perform.
By lampooning chart hits and concocting humorous originals, The Skivvies are reminiscent of “Weird Al” Yankovic — if he performed in his boxers.
The duo is comprised of Nick Cearley and Lauren Molina, two longtime friends and theater veterans: Harlem resident Cearley has appeared in All Shook Up and Pageant while Molina has been seen in Rock of Ages and Sweeney Todd.
The Skivvies are preparing for their latest original show — Splashdance! — which will be held on March 16 in Manhattan.
“We’ll be parodying Flashdance, and other famous things,” said Molina. “There will be some water involved, so things could get a little messy.”
The Skivvies became YouTube sensations in 2012 with their crafty version of Rihanna’s “We Found Love.”
Prior to shooting the video, Molina was trying to figure out what to wear, and had just her bra on, and I said, ‘Why don’t you just wear that?'” Cearley explained. “We stripped down the music, but that took it to a whole new level.”
Subsequent videos also garnered attention, and the pair soon began playing live concerts.
The group said that performing in their underwear presents a unique set of concerns.
“I’d say you have to keep yourself well-groomed,” remarked Molina.
“Luckily, the venues we’ve played in haven’t been that cold,” joked Cearley. “But I’ll say that we’d definitely never play outside in the winter.”
Considering the duo’s state of undress, there’s no room for body-image hangups, said Molina.
“Playing in your underwear, you have to let go of any self-consciousness that you have,” she explained.
“The music actually makes me forget that I’m not wearing much.”
Splashdance! will be performed at 42West, a 14,000-square-foot multipurpose performance space.
ince opening about a year ago, the site has hosted appearances by Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Meryl Streep, Tracey Ullman, Chaka Kahn and others.
“The club has a really cool vibe,” said Molina. “We feel like rock stars when we play there.”
The show features guest artists from stage and screen, including Shannon Ford, James Carpinello, Phillipa Soo, Ephraim Sykes and Adam Kantor, and is enhanced by images shown on a 30-foot LED wall.
Splashdance! marks the start of a Skivvies residency at 42West, which will see the group perform one show per month, each with a different theme.
“We’re excited to be doing monthly shows and we’ll keep doing it as long as people keep coming,” said Cearley.
What The Skivvies might lack in onstage attire, they make up for with wit and charm.
Clothing isn’t removed in a seductive or suggestive manner — a “strip with no tease,” as one theater critic remarked.
“We don’t play into the sex aspect of it,” said Cearley. “We focus on the music and make sure our act is not just a gimmick.”
“We’ve had a lot of theater people tell us that we’ve been inspiration to them,” said Molina. “That’s the biggest compliment.”
The Skivvies will perform Splashdance! on Mon., Mar. 16 at 9 p.m. at 42West, 514 West 42nd Street, New York, NY.

No sólo desnudan la música, el grupo literalmente se despoja de su ropa interior para la presentación.
Satirizando éxitos e inventando canciones originales chistosas, los Skivvies son una reminiscencia de “Weird Al” Yankovic, si actuara en calzoncillos.

“Por suerte, los lugares en los que hemos tocado no han sido tan fríos”, bromeó Cearley. “Pero voy a decir que definitivamente nunca tocaríamos afuera durante el invierno”.
Teniendo en cuenta el estado de desnudez del dúo, no hay espacio para problemas de bloqueo de imagen corporal, dijo Molina.
“Al tocar en tu ropa interior, tienes que soltar cualquier auto-conciencia “, explicó. “La música, de hecho, me hace olvidar que no estoy usando mucho”.
Splashdance! se presentará en 42West, un espacio multiusos de 14,000 pies cuadrados. Desde que abrió hace aproximadamente un año, el sitio ha tenido apariciones de Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Meryl Streep, Tracey Ullman, Chaka Kahn y otros.
“El club tiene un ambiente genial”, dijo Molina. “Nos sentimos como estrellas de rock cuando tocamos ahí”.
El espectáculo cuenta con artistas invitados en el escenario y la pantalla, incluyendo a Shannon Ford, James Carpinello, Phillipa Soo, Ephraim Sykes y Adam Kantor; y es reforzado por imágenes mostradas en una pared LED de 30 pies.
Splashdance! marca el inicio de una residencia de los Skivvies en 42West, que verá al grupo hacer una presentación por mes, cada una con un tema diferente.
“Estamos muy contentos de hacer espectáculos mensuales y vamos a seguir haciéndolo siempre y cuando las personas sigan viniendo”, dijo Cearley.
Lo que los Skivvies podrían carecer en traje en el escenario, lo compensan con ingenio y encanto.
No se quitan la ropa de manera seductora o sugestiva; se “desvisten sin erotismo”, como comentó un crítico de teatro.
“No tocamos el aspecto sexual de ello”, dijo Cearley. “Nos centramos en la música y nos aseguramos de que nuestro acto no sea sólo un truco”.
“Mucha gente del teatro nos dice que hemos sido inspiración “, dijo Molina. “Ese es el mayor cumplido”.
