The Cabrini Repertory Theater opens its doors

Moschetti and Gudrun Bühler have founded a
new theater space uptown.
“Collaboration.”
That’s the word heard most frequently when conversing with the husband-wife team of artistic directors of the newly formed Cabrini Repertory Theater.
Washington Heights residents Franco Moschetti and Gudrun Bühler moved from Europe to Manhattan in 1999, seeking the vibrant creative opportunities of the city. Their journey led them to spearhead a gathering place for the performing arts that many in the Heights have long clamored for.
The Cabrini Repertory Theater is a quality performing space created with the goal of nurturing new works in the arts and offering a space for artist collaborations.
The environment offers experimentation with minimal financial pressure.
The founding couple fondly refers to it as a “multi-cultural space.”
The vision began with Franco, a playwright and director who recently enjoyed runs at the Manhattan Repertory Theatre and The New York Fringe Festival.
His wife, Gudrun, shares that vision and has a background in opera, acting and playwriting.
While attending Manhattan School Of Music to acquire a second master’s degree, Gudrun imagined further creative outlets.
“I had an idea of doing classical singing accompanied by other arts,” she explained, “including movement and theater. So this is a dream come true. This theater is a place where you can try those things.”
Although more of the couples’ own work will be included in future schedules, their initial focus is to support and develop the work of other artists.
They searched diligently for a suitable home for the theater.
“But when we walked into this space,” said Gudrun, “there was an instant connection. And this is a beautiful community, a special place.”
The theater is an independent building of the Mother Cabrini High School. Realizing the educational and community benefits of the project, the school made a generous arrangement with the couple to use the space on evenings and weekends.
“The school was really supportive, “said Franco. “They understood how much the arts can change the environment. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be here. We also believe in the mission of Mother Cabrini, so it was a match made in heaven.”
Without delay, the arts-loving couple took a hardy leap of faith for the kick-off of the new theater and the Thespis Festival was born.
In the new festival/ competition, artists benefit from the use of the space for mounting, honing, and performing their works.
In addition, generous awards were offered: five thousand dollars for “Best Play,” one thousand dollars for the play that “Helps Make The World A Better Place,” and five hundred dollars for “Best Actor.”
“That’s a lot of money,” said Franco. “Some people thought it must be a scam!”
In a win-win artist exchange, the competing productions were also offered the space for discounted filming by local videographers and services from web designers.
Entries flooded in.
Out of 240 submissions, twenty were selected for production.
Each play – seven of them from out-of-state – arrived self-contained with their actors, directors, and staff. Tickets for the plays were kept at twenty dollars.

Following the announcements of festival winners at the end of October, the theater plans to expand their programs further with more drama, musicals, music concerts, and dance, as well as exhibitions of art and photography.
Also upcoming will be The Venice Festival, featuring women playwrights.
“It’s a long process and for now the important thing is getting the word out,” said Franco. “It takes a lot of work and, realistically, your mantra becomes ‘You’ve got to pull down your expenses.’”
Yet, Franco still heartily welcomes artists to stretch beyond the mainstream and experiment with endeavors that might not be possible elsewhere.
“I talked to a pro opera singer and asked what he wanted to do,” recounted Franco. “He said, ‘I’d love to sing Johnny Cash!’ This is the place for that!”
“Even though it’s just the budding,” says Gudrun,” it’s very gratifying to see how the theater’s bringing people together. We open our arms to all those who would like to go further with their art, collaborate, use the space, and have fun with it.”
The Thespis Festival runs from September through October.

Es la palabra escuchada con mayor frecuencia al conversar con el equipo de directores artísticos – marido y mujer – del recién formado Cabrini Repertory Theatre.
Franco Moschetti y Gudrun Bühler, residentes de Washington Heights, se mudaron de Europa a Manhattan en 1999, buscando las vibrantes oportunidades creativas de la ciudad. Su viaje les ha llevado a la vanguardia de un lugar de encuentro para las artes escénicas que muchos en Washington Heights han clamado por largo tiempo.

Su esposa, Gudrun, comparte esa visión y tiene experiencia en ópera, actuación y como escritora de obras de teatro.
Mientras asistía a la Manhattan School Of Music para obtener su segundo Master, Gudrun imaginaba nuevas salidas creativas.
“Yo tenía una idea de hacer canto clásico acompañado por otras artes”, explicó, “incluyendo movimiento y teatro. Así que este es un sueño hecho realidad. Este teatro es un lugar en donde se pueden experimentar esas cosas”.
Aunque mucho de la obra de la pareja será incluida en futuros programas, su interés inicial consiste en apoyar y desarrollar el trabajo de otros artistas.
Han buscado diligentemente para un hogar adecuado para el teatro.
“Cuando entramos en este espacio,” dice Gudrun, “hubo una conexión instantánea. Esta es una comunidad hermosa, un lugar especial.”
El teatro es un edificio independiente de la Escuela Superior Mother Cabrini. Consciente de los beneficios educativos y comunitarios que brindaría el proyecto, la escuela hizo un acuerdo generoso con la pareja para utilizar el espacio en las noches y los fines de semana.
“La escuela fue un gran apoyo”, dijo Franco. “Entendieron lo mucho que las artes pueden cambiar el entorno. Si no fuera por ellos, no estaríamos aquí. También creemos en la misión de la Madre Cabrini, somos como una pareja perfecta”.
Sin demora, la pareja amante de las artes dio un gran salto de fe para la inauguración del nuevo teatro y el Thespis Festival nació.
En el nuevo festival/competencia, los artistas se benefician del uso del espacio para el montaje, perfeccionando y llevando a cabo sus obras.
Además, generosos premios fueron ofrecidos: cinco mil dólares a la “mejor obra”, mil dólares si “ayuda a que el mundo sea un mejor lugar”, y quinientos dólares para el “Mejor Actor”.
“Es un montón de dinero”, dijo Franco. “¡Algunas personas pensaron que era una estafa!”
En un intercambio artístico en que todos ganan, a las producciones en competencia se les ofreció el espacio para el rodaje con productores locales a bajo costo, así como servicios de diseñadores web.
Las inscripciones cayeron del cielo.

teatro en Washington Heights.
De 240 propuestas, veinte fueron seleccionadas para la producción.
Cada obra, siete de las cuales pertenecía a otro estado, llegaron con sus actores, directores y personal. Las entradas para el teatro se mantuvieron en veinte dólares.
Después de anunciar a los ganadores del festival a finales de octubre, el teatro planea ampliar sus programas con más drama, musicales, conciertos de música y danza, así como exposiciones de arte y fotografía.
También se presentará The Venice Festival, presentando dramaturgas.
“Es un proceso largo y por ahora lo importante es correr la voz”, dijo Franco. “Se necesita una gran cantidad de trabajo y, en realidad, el mantra se convierte en ‘tienes que reducir los gastos'”.
Sin embargo, Franco aún acoge con entusiasmo a artistas para expandirse más allá de la escena convencional y experimentar con grandes esfuerzos lo que podría no ser posible en otros lugares.
“Hablé con un cantante de ópera y le pregunté qué era lo que quería hacer”, relató Franco. “Y dijo: me encantaría cantar canciones de Johnny Cash!”. ¡Este es el lugar para eso!”
“A pesar de ser sólo el inicio”, dice Gudrun, “es muy gratificante ver cómo el teatro reúne a la gente. Abrimos nuestros brazos a todos los que quieran ir más allá con su arte, colaborar, utilizar el espacio y divertirse con él.”
