The New York City Board of Elections (BOE) has relocated several voting locations for the September 9 primary, including some in Washington Heights, Inwood, Harlem and Marble Hill.
According to the BOE, the changes were made because the previous poll sites were not compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
That the changes occurred just days before the primary has rankled some candidates, who fear that uptown residents will be confused about where they should vote.
“That will dramatically impact the turnout,” said incumbent State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who is being challenged in the 31st District Senate Race by former City Councilman Robert Jackson as well as Luis Tejada.
An estimated 3,000 voters will be affected by the poll site changes, according to published reports.
The BOE has stated that voters were notified of the changes by mail, and details have been posted on the agency’s website.
In addition, workers will be posted outside the old polling sites on Primary Day to inform voters of the correct locations, the BOE said.
Polls will be open for voters between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Tues., Sept. 9th.

La Junta de Elecciones de la ciudad de Nueva York (BOE por sus siglas en inglés) ha reubicado varios lugares de votación para la primaria del 9 de septiembre, incluyendo algunos en Washington Heights, Inwood, Harlem y Marble Hill.
De acuerdo con el BOE, los cambios se realizaron debido a que los anteriores centros de votación no eran compatibles con la Ley de Americanos con Discapacidades (ADA por sus siglas en inglés).
Que los cambios ocurrieran sólo días antes de las primarias ha irritado a algunos candidatos, pues temen que los residentes del norte del condado estén confundidos acerca de dónde deben votar.
“Eso va a impactar dramáticamente el número de votantes”, dijo el senador estatal titular Adriano Espaillat, quien está siendo desafiado en la carrera por el Distrito 31 por el ex concejal Robert Jackson, así como por Luis Tejada.
Se estima que unos 3,000 votantes se verán afectados por los cambios en los centros de votación, según los informes publicados.
La BOE ha declarado que los votantes fueron notificados de los cambios por correo electrónico y los detalles se han publicado en la página web de la agencia.
Además, letreros serán publicados afuera de los viejos sitios de votación el día de las primarias para informar a los votantes las ubicaciones correctas, según la BOE.
Las urnas estarán abiertas para los votantes de 6 a.m. a 9 p.m. el martes 9 de septiembre.
