“It’s been a beautiful time here,” said United Palace Cathedral’s Pastor Jack Bomar, who is moving on.

This past Sun., Apr. 28th was a sad day as members of the United Palace Cathedral (UPC) bid Pastor Jack Bomar farewell.

Pastor Jack, as he is known to all, is leaving for the UPC’s mother church in Buford, S.C. Nearly 200 people were on hand for the farewell service and reception, including long-time congregants and prominent community members.

Pastor Jack said that the Buford church, which was also started by the late Reverend Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, or Rev. Ike, is in need of revitalization.

“It’s God’s call that I go there and help revive that community,” he said.

He said the vision of Bishop Xavier Eikerenkoetter (Bishop Xavier), Rev. Ike’s son and successor, for the New York church had changed and that the South Carolina church was in need of support.

The congregation there has dwindled and its relevance in the community has become limited, he said.

Congregants gathered to bid him farewell.

“They need pastoral leadership,” he added.

Pastor Jack’s tenure at the United Palace Cathedral began in the summer of 2011. Later that fall, he was installed as the Pastor.

Hundreds of people sat in the plush red velvet seats of the theatre as Bishop Xavier played African drums and led the pastor through a shamanic ceremony of death and rebirth.

The event space in which church services are held was packed on Sunday with well-wishers.

Dr. Rafael Lantigua said that for years, the church had seemed isolated from the community and it had become more far integrated with the community at large of late.

Since the fall, the United Palace has sponsored many youth and community programs and hosted special events.

Pastor Jack’s Blessing Hands Ministry, which focused on poverty in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, would continue, he explained, through his own foundation.

“It’s God’s call that I go [to South Carolina],” he said of his move to the mother church in South Carolina.

Such work with local residents, with Community Board 12 and in the Dominican Republic, was very important, Dr. Lantigua said.

“I was very impressed by him. He was very charismatic, [and had] good communication skills, all while being very compassionate,” he said. “He was a person who was looking for unity, and from the first day, I felt like his agenda was my agenda.”

Others in attendance included Community Board 12 Chair George Fernández and Fresh Youth Initiatives Executive Director Steve Ramos.

A new pastor is expected to join the congregation in early June.

Rev. Danielle James worked closely with Pastor Jack for last two and a half years.

“I’m happy because I know this is something good for him to move on to something bigger and better. I know it’s divinely appointed,” she said. “But at the same time, for my own selfish reasons, I wish he didn’t have to go.”

Charlie Rice, United Palace’s security director, said it was good to work with him. “When you look at Pastor Jack, you know he has that calling,” he said.

If Pastor Jack was sad, he didn’t show it.

“It’s been a beautiful time here,” he said. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity to serve here.”

“It’s been a beautiful time here,” said United Palace Cathedral’s Pastor Jack Bomar, who is moving on.

Congregants gathered to bid him farewell.
