By Ruth Lilienstein-Gatton Q: When did you first have the idea for a film festival in Inwood? I’ve been producing vaudeville and variety shows on the back porch of my place on Park Terrace West for the last five years, with the goal of cultivating an uptown audience and featuring amazing, underserved local talent. I ran into Todd [Cerveris] one day and he had just finished a short film project, and we started talking about the lack of cinema up here, and started discussing creating a film event. Jason [Minter], whom we both knew as having a film background, was interested as well. We initially thought we would put together a small program at the Indian Road Cafe on an off night. Obviously, our idea caught on and exceeded all expectations, and we’re doing our best to meet them. Q: How did your professional background help you develop the project? As mentioned, Jason has a film background and Todd is an actor with experience in theater, TV, and film. I, as well, have had a career on stage and in front of the camera. Plus, I’ve acquired a new set of executive skills from completing an MFA in Theater Management & Producing at Columbia University. All our prior experience has been transferable and extremely helpful. Q: How did you go about soliciting entries? The old fashioned way – by word-of-mouth. We are as grassroots as our local parks and figured people would let us know pretty quick if they were interested or not. We also connected with the community by using social media, speaking at schools and bars, and by a lot of meetings over coffee. Q: As a long-time Inwood resident, what do you think inspires filmmakers about the neighborhood, and what makes it a good locale for shooting films? There is no one answer but you can obviously point to the attractive cultural landscape: the parks, bridges, architectural features, subway platforms, etc. I would also have to say the diversity, intelligence, talent, and inherent kindness of so many residents make it a truly unique neighborhood. Q: How many short film entries did you receive? Over 50. Q: How did you and the other judges choose the films that will be shown? The submitted films needed to meet the submission requirements; the jury votes by secret ballot. Q: How do these selections reflect the unique diversity of the neighborhood? Watch them and find out! With our pop-up cinema we hope to create an artistic platform that will be embraced by and unite the community. With no traditional performance spaces or movie theaters up here, where small arts groups can produce their work and present it to local audiences, we are a kind of ‘venue-desert.’ This is extremely frustrating, particularly when so many empty storefronts line our streets. The Inwood Film Festival could be a positive step towards establishing a professional cultural arts hub in Inwood. At the very least, I hope the festival showcases and celebrates the talented filmmakers who live in Inwood and draws attention to a great uptown community that supports artistic creativity.En escena
