Mi Gente: Pope as Person of the Year?

Mi Gente is a recurring column that allows our readers and neighbors to weigh in on the issues of the day, sharing the first-person perspective delivered directly from our street corners, bodegas, parks, schools and small businesses.
It’s not every year that both Time Magazine and The Advocate, the oldest magazine in the country of interest to the LGBTQ community, agree on just who the “Person of the Year” is.
This year, for both periodicals, the choice was clear: Pope Francis.
The head of the Catholic Church, appointed in March when Pope Benedict stepped down, is a 77-year-old Argentine Jesuit and the first Pope from South America.
In his short tenure, Pope Francis has demonstrated a willingness to serve as a counterpoint to his predecessor, who championed a return to more traditional and conservative values.
Instead, he has focused on creating new paths of dialogue.

Among many surprises, he labeled unbridled capitalism a form of “tyranny” against the poor, and appeared on Twitter bearing an anti-fracking shirt.
And in addressing those who are gay, the Pope famously asked, “If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”
For the Time Magazine honor bestowed on Dec. 11th, the Pope beat out Edward Snowden and Miley Cyrus.
“He comes at a time when the Church is needing a huge burst of energy, and then he has this charisma, which seems to come out of nowhere,” explained Howard Chua-Eoan, a contributor for Time in an online video. “He is hugging people you would not want to touch; he’s washing the feet of convicts. He is especially caring about the poor.”
“To see him juggling all this in the next years will be fascinating.”
“Pope Francis’ stark change in rhetoric from his two predecessors makes what he’s done in 2013 all the more daring,” wrote the editors of The Advocate in their December issue. In contrast, both John Paul II and Benedict XVI had previously been among the magazine’s “Phobie Awards” for what was perceived as anti-gay stances during their papacies.

Local residents had their own opinions.
“I wouldn’t know what he’s done to be the person of the year. I don’t know what he’s done besides being pope,” shrugged an unimpressed Edward Kenny, an employee at Dichter’s Pharmacy.
“I hear people like him because he’s chill.”
But Brad King, who studies theology at the University of Texas and was visiting friends for the holidays, thought the designation was merited.
“I think it’s awesome,” he said. “Francis is doing a good thing turning the church around. He hasn’t said anything ground-breaking. But he says things in a way that people will listen.”
King pointed to the Pope’s criticism of capitalism, which has provoked some conservatives like Rush Limbaugh to accuse him of being Marxist, and his calls for tolerance on people’s private lives and relationships.
“My favorite thing he’s done was boot out the German archbishop,” he said, referring to German bishop Franz Peter Tebartz-van Elst, who reportedly spent 31 million euros renovating his home.
King thought Snowden would have been a good choice as well, but felt the Pope has a broader global impact.

Lawyer Alberto Torres said he sensed a conflict in choosing between the Pope and Snowden.
Of the latter, he said, “The reality is that you’re looking at someone who has committed a crime.”
But, he noted, “The Church has committed crimes too, with the Crusades and the Inquisition. That’s the irony of it, I guess.”
Paola Núñez was glad Snowden wasn’t chosen.
“He’s not a trustworthy person.”
Núñez said she admired the Pope for fighting corruption in the church, and for taking what has been interpreted to be a more forgiving stance on homosexuality.
“He doesn’t condemn people, and he doesn’t hide the bad things,” she said, referring to his criticism of the manner in which the Catholic Church dealt with priests accused of sexual abuse.
Amalia Movi agreed.
“He came to put an end to the corruption of the church, and the predatory priests,” she said. “People have lost faith in the church because of the scandals.”
Denise Bryant explained that she was an atheist, and that it mattered little to her. Snowden “would have been more interesting. He’s a rebel.”
Hamado Kougou had another choice altogether.
“I think Chris Christie should have been the Person of the Year because of what he did after the hurricane. He worked a lot to restore people and the buildings,” she opined. “He’s a Republican, but he cooperated with the President, and put aside his opinions to work for the people.”
Finally, one resident who wished to remain anonymous, said he was opposed altogether to the choice – or any such choice.
“I don’t believe in designating people for Person of the year,” he said.

Este año, para ambas revistas, la elección fue clara: el Papa Francisco.
El jefe de la Iglesia Católica, nombrado en marzo, cuando el Papa Benedicto renunció, es un jesuita argentino de 77 años de edad, y el primer Papa de América del Sur.
En su breve mandato, el Papa Francisco ha demostrado una voluntad de servir, como contrapunto a su predecesor, quien defendió una vuelta a los valores más tradicionales y conservadores.
En cambio, se ha centrado en crear nuevos caminos de diálogo.
Entre muchas sorpresas, calificó el capitalismo desenfrenado como una forma de “tiranía” en contra de los pobres, y apareció en Twitter llevando una camiseta anti-fracking.
Y para abordar la homosexualidad, el Papa hizo la famosa pregunta: “Si alguien es un homosexual que busca al Señor y tiene buena voluntad, ¿quién soy yo para juzgarlo?”
Para Time Magazine con el honor concedido el 11 de diciembre, el Papa venció a Edward Snowden y Miley Cyrus.
“Él llega en un momento en que la Iglesia está necesitando una enorme descarga de energía y tiene este carisma, que parece salir de la nada”, explicó Howard Chua-EOAN, colaborador de Time en un video en línea. “Él está abrazando a la gente usted no querría tocar, él está lavando los pies de los condenados. Cuida especialmente de los pobres”.
“Verlo lo haciendo malabares de todo esto en los próximos años va a ser fascinante”.
“El crudo cambio del Papa Francisco en la retórica de sus dos predecesores hace de lo que hizo en el año 2013, mucho más atrevido”, escribieron los editores de The Advocate en su ejemplar de diciembre. Por el contrario, tanto Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI habían estado previamente en los “Phobie Awards” de la revista por lo que se percibía como posturas contra los homosexuales durante sus pontificados.

Los residentes locales tienen sus propias opiniones.
“Yo no sé lo que hizo para ser la persona del año. No sé qué ha hecho, además de ser Papa”, se encogió de hombros un poco impresionado Edward Kenny, empleado en la farmacia Dichter.
“Escucho a la gente decir que les cae bien porque es relajado”.
Pero Brad King, quien estudia teología en la Universidad de Texas y estaba visitando amigos por las fiestas, piensa que la designación fue merecida.
“Creo que es increíble”, dijo. “Francisco está haciendo algo bueno dando un giro a la iglesia. Él no ha dicho nada innovador pero dice las cosas de una manera en que la gente lo va a escuchar”.
King destacó la crítica del Papa al capitalismo, que ha provocado que algunos conservadores como Rush Limbaugh lo acusen de ser marxista, y sus llamadas a la tolerancia en la vida y las relaciones privadas de las personas.

“Mi cosa favorita que ha hecho fue echar al arzobispo alemán”, dijo, refiriéndose al obispo alemán Franz Peter Tebartz-van Elst, quien, según se informó, gastó 31 millones de euros renovando su casa.
King piensa que Snowden habría sido una buena opción también, pero cree que el Papa tiene un impacto global más amplio.
El abogado Alberto Torres dijo que sintió un conflicto en la elección entre el Papa y Snowden.
De este último, dijo, “La realidad es que estás mirando una persona que cometió un crimen”.
Pero, señaló, “La Iglesia ha cometido crímenes también, con las Cruzadas y la Inquisición. Esa es la ironía de la situación, supongo”.
Paola Núñez se alegró de que Snowden no fuera elegido.
“No es una persona confiable”.
Núñez dijo admira al Papa para combatir la corrupción en la iglesia, y de tomar lo que se ha interpretado como una postura más tolerante hacia la homosexualidad.

“Él no condena a las personas, y no oculta las cosas malas”, dijo, en referencia a sus críticas a la manera en que la Iglesia Católica trató con los sacerdotes acusados de abuso sexual.
Amalia Movi estuvo de acuerdo.
“Él vino a poner fin a la corrupción de la iglesia y a los sacerdotes depredadores”, dijo. “La gente ha perdido la fe en la Iglesia a causa de los escándalos”.
Denise Bryant explicó que es atea y que poco le importa. Snowden “habría sido más interesante. Él es un rebelde”.
Hamado Kougou tenía otra elección.
“Creo que Chris Christie debería haber sido la persona del año a causa de lo que hizo después del huracán. Trabajó mucho para restablecer la gente y los edificios “, opinó. “Es un republicano, pero cooperó con el Presidente e hizo a un lado sus opiniones a trabajar por el pueblo”.
Por último, un residente que pidió no ser identificado dijo que se oponía por completo a la elección, o cualquier otra opción.
“Yo no creo en la designación de personas para Persona del año”, dijo.
