Who says you can’t go home again?
On Fri., Nov. 14th, former East Harlem residents will gather to share an oral history of their time living in the community.
Current neighborhood residents will also share stories at the event, titled “East Harlem Voices,” which takes place at The Poet’s Den Gallery.
“It’s a great way to relive memories and help the younger generation learn how the history of the neighborhood was shaped,” said Raphael Benavides, Executive Director of The Poet’s Den.
The event is inspired by two books by East Harlem author Christopher Bell, who has documented the neighborhood in East Harlem Revisited and East Harlem Remembered.
Bell and Benavides collaborated on putting together the East Harlem Voices showcase, by inviting participants who had a close relationship to the community.

“East Harlem has always been a diverse and changing community, and has a history of different people, whether Jewish, Italian, Polish,
Hispanic or more,” said Benavides. “No matter the ethnicity, they all have a story to tell.”
Benavides said that the close-knit nature of the neighborhood is something that bonds its residents. And though several people speaking at the event are returning to Harlem for the first time in a while, they might feel as if they never left.
“Even if people move from the neighborhood, they can always consider it home,” said Benavides. “That’s what East Harlem does to you — it’s that pride.”
East Harlem Voices will take place on Friday, Nov. 14 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at The Poet’s Den, 309 East 108th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues.

¿Quién dice que no puedes regresar a casa otra vez?
El viernes 14 de noviembre los antiguos residentes de East Harlem
en la comunidad.
Los actuales vecinos del barrio también compartirán historias en el evento titulado “East Harlem Voices”, que tendrá lugar en la galería The Poet’s Den.
“Es una gran forma de revivir recuerdos y de ayudar a la generación más joven para que conozca cómo se dio forma a la historia del barrio”, dijo Raphael Benavides, director ejecutivo de The Poet’s Den.
El evento está inspirado en dos libros de Christopher Bell, autor de East Harlem, quien ha documentado el barrio en East Harlem Revisited y también en East Harlem Remembered.
Bell y Benavides colaboraron en la exhibición de East Harlem Voices invitando a los participantes que tenían una estrecha relación con la comunidad.
Además de la narración de cuentos, habrá una presentación de fotos históricas, así como alimentos y bebidas.
“East Harlem ha sido siempre una comunidad diversa y cambiante, y tiene una historia de diferentes personas, ya sean judías, italianas, polacas, hispanas u otras”, dijo Benavides. “Sin importar el origen étnico, todos tienen una historia que contar”.
Benavides dijo que la naturaleza del barrio es algo que une a sus residentes, y que aunque muchas de las personas que hablarán en el evento estarán regresando a Harlem por primera vez en mucho tiempo, podrían sentir como si nunca se hubieran ido.
“Incluso si la gente se muda del barrio, siempre pueden considerarlo su hogar”, dijo Benavides. “Eso es lo que East Harlem te hace, es el orgullo”.
East Harlem Voices tendrá lugar al viernes 14 de noviembre de 6 p.m. a 10 p.m. en The Poet’s Den, ubicado en el 309 de la calle 108 este, entre las avenidas Primera y Segunda.
