American Virtuosi Ensemble Visit El Museo del Barrio on Feb. 12th from 8 – 10 p.m. for music by harpsichord virtuoso Kenneth Hamrick. Performing with the American Virtuosi Ensemble, the group will perform Roberto Sierra’s Concierto Nocturnal and Manuel de Falla’s Concerto for harpsichord, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin and cello, which was the inspiration for Sierra’s work. The performance will be presented together with a video installation of artwork, specially created for this event by award winning artist Nitza Tufiño. New York Portraits Discover the history of the wealthy elite at the Museum of the City of New York, beginning on Fri., Feb. 5th. Early into the 18th century, the city’s elite commissioned paintings of themselves and their loved ones to display in their homes as indicators of prestige. Portraits were often created to commemorate a significant moment in the sitter’s life—a marriage, acquiring an inheritance, or assuming an important position—and offered an opportunity for the subject to present a carefully crafted image to the world. Drawn from the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York, the exhibit “Picturing Prestige: New York Portraits, 1700-1860” features works by many of the leading American painters of their day and chronicles the changing nature of portraiture and artistic patronage, as it ties together the lives of a group of leading citizens who enjoyed financial and social benefits beyond the reach of most New Yorkers. Bradley True Music Enjoy a musical performance for children of all ages at the Inwood Library on Fri., Feb. 19th at 10:30 a.m. Presented by guitarist Bradley True and his pal Gus Guitar, True will perform original tunes and classic renditions to aid children in achieving developmental milestones while introducing new exercises to be practiced at home. Home at Word Up Join the Word Up volunteer collective on Sat., Feb. 6th at 2 p.m. for the launch of their bilingual children’s book, Home at Word Up, with a reading, sing-along, hot chocolate and other treats, along with a discussion on the making of the book. In Home at Word Up, a little girl, the help of her aunt and some new friends, finds a place where she can tell her story. Produced entirely by the Word Up volunteer collective, Home at Word Up: A Story of a Bookshop in Washington Heights is a tale of finding and building community anywhere you live.
