Manhattan served it up.
On Sat., Jul. 12th, USTA Eastern and City Parks Foundation teamed up to present the Finals of the Battle of the Boroughs Tennis Challenge, an adult recreational tournament held in parks across New York City.
Beginning in May, the tournament featured teams of six to eight players competing within their borough, with each borough’s top team advancing to the July 12th championship. The teams contending for the Championship Cup at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center were Frederick Johnson Playground Team for Manhattan; Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Team; Queens’ Astoria Park Team; the Bronx’s Crotona Park Team; and Staten Island’s Silver Lake Park Team.
Emerging victorious after a set of tumultuous matches was the Frederick Johnson Playground Team from Harlem.
“I haven’t been playing as much tennis these days, but decided to play for Battle of the Boroughs since I appreciated the cause,” said Marina Oetiker, member of the winning team. “Once I saw the trophy, I got so excited and really wanted to win.”
Oetiker’s teammate, Francesca Fanchin, grew up playing tennis with the City Parks Foundation and at programs in Harlem and Inwood.
“Getting to play against really good players from around the boroughs of New York is amazing, because you don’t normally get to find so much talent in one group,” said Fanchin.
The Battle of the Boroughs tournament supported the work of CityParks Tennis, which provides free tennis lessons and activities for children at 40 parks citywide.
CityParks Tennis presented by Chase, is one of the largest municipal tennis programs in the country, providing free tennis lessons and activities to children ages 6 to 16. CityParks Tennis also features an advanced training academy, which offers talented youth with financial need the opportunity to bring their game to a higher level of competition.

El sábado 12 de julio, USTA Eastern y Fundación de Parques de la ciudad, hicieron equipo para presentar las finales del desafío de tenis Batalla de los Condados, un torneo recreativo para adultos que se llevó a cabo en parques de toda la ciudad de Nueva York.
A partir de mayo, el torneo presentó equipos de seis a ocho jugadores que compitieron dentro de su condado, después con el mejor equipo de cada condado para avanzar al campeonato del 12 de julio. Los equipos que compitieron por la Copa del Campeonato en el centro nacional de tenis de USTA Billie Jean King fueron: el equipo del parque infantil Frederick Johnson por Manhattan; el equipo de Prospect Park de Brooklyn; el equipo de Astoria Park de Queens; el equipo de Crotona Park del Bronx; y el equipo de Silver Lake Park de Staten Island.
Saliendo victorioso después de una serie de partidos tumultuosos fue el equipo del parque infantil Frederick Johnson de Harlem.
“No he jugado tanto al tenis en estos días, pero decidí jugar para la Batalla de los Condados ya que me gustó la causa”, dijo Marina Oetiker, miembro del equipo ganador. “Una vez que vi el trofeo, me emocioné mucho y realmente quería ganar”.
