UC Recap – June 17 – June 22

 June 17 – June 22

Parting is such sweet sorrow. The 2019 Uptown Art Stroll is coming to a close. The Uptown Arts Stroll closing reception takes place on Thursday, June 27 at The Harlem School of the Arts (645 Saint Nicholas Ave @ 141st St) from 6:30 to 8 pm. The event is free and will feature performances by Obrien LunaDJ LiKWUiD and students from The Harlem School of the Arts. By the way, don’t forget, use the hashtag #UptownArtStroll on all of your 2019 stroll pics and videos for your chance to win a free night’s stay at the beautiful Edge Hotel located in the heart of Washington Heights.

The good folks at Buunni Coffee have kicked off a crowd-funding campaign to create a much-needed performance space for Inwood. THE BUUNNI PERFORMANCE SPACE will present live performance (music and theater), artwork (fine art and photography), literature (readings and poetry) and social justice and wellness programming (lectures and workshops), with the mission to serve the diverse community of upper Manhattan.

Please give what you can to this important endeavor.

The Uptown Tweet of the Week goes to visionary director, Ava DuVernay, for her tweet on the love Korey Wise receives on a daily basis in Harlem. If you have not seen Ava DuVernay’s new film When They See Us, then please do so ASAP. It will rock you to your core.

For those that don’t know, June 19 is Juneteenth. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Since Google somehow forgot to celebrate that important date with their Google doodles, artist Davian Chester did his own and it promptly went viral. Check it out on our site. Speaking of Juneteenth, I celebrated the occasion at the cozy Cove Lounge for a simply spectacular Nite Brunch. Trust me folks, Chef Harold Breton is putting it down. His take on shrimp and grits is truly delectable.

Speaking of great meals, the wife and I celebrated our anniversary at the fabulous Zona De Cuba (558 Grand Concourse) last night. Stay tuned for my review of the meal but make sure you check that place out ASAP. The place is a stunner and they are not playing with the food either. Thank us later.
