Tent Theater turns it up

There’s no shortage of talent in Northern Manhattan. It’s performance space that’s lacking.
That scarcity is why Open Tent Theater Company’s upcoming “Winter Shorts: An Original Play Festival” will be performed in Chelsea.
The Washington Heights-based acting troupe’s latest offering includes eight 10-minute plays, performed by 40 actors, several of them from uptown.
Giselle D’Souza-Siegel and Sarah Medved formed Open Tent in 2013. In the past year and a half, they’ve presented two feature-length plays, The Last Night of Ballyhoo and Isn’t it Romantic.
They’ve also created a buzz in the community with their open mic nights and 24-hour play festivals where plays are written, rehearsed and acted all within a single day.
“A lot of the people in the 24-hour play festivals—that was their first time acting,” explained D’Souza-Siegel. “It was kind of exciting to get people who are not necessarily actors to be involved.”
The WaHi theater company requested submissions for plays earlier this fall and received about 150 from all over the country. “We were really overwhelmed with the response. It was exciting to have so many options,” she said.
They wanted 10-minute comedies for a 90-minute show with no intermission. “We were definitely looking for female roles since we noticed a lot of our female friends were looking performance opportunities,” D’Souza-Siegel said.
One of the plays, A Slight Change to the Script, is co-written by Washington Heights residents Ezra Wolkenfeld and Michael Pershan. They’ve participated in past 24-hour play festivals and open mic nights. “I think we hosted an open mic night at one of their apartments,” said D’Souza-Siegel.
The play, which stars Medved, Tosh Hall and Benjamin Bailey, centers on a high school play and the quirky events that unfold during a rehearsal.
Another play, Dancing in the Elevator, is by Florida playwright Dorothea Cahan. It’s about a young woman with boyfriend troubles who asks a tea-leaf reader (played by D’Souza-Siegel) for advice. Falling for You, by California writer Tom Misuraca, is about a first date gone terribly wrong.
The Maltese Walter by John Minigan features a young man who consults a therapist because he thinks he’s a superhero—Film Noir Man. “His superpower is that he can turn any moment into film noir,” said D’Souza-Siegel. “It’s pretty hilarious.”
Open Tent originally wanted to hold “Winter Shorts” in the theater at Mother Cabrini High School, but the school’s closure nixed that plan.
“It was the only space in Washington Heights itself that was affordable for a small theater company like ours to use,” she said. They continued to look into other uptown locations, but ultimately found their solution downtown.
Open Tent hopes to find performance space uptown for its upcoming summer productions. And the group is planning another 24-hour play festival and a possible outdoor performance.
“Winter Shorts” will be performed at various times during Super Bowl weekend. A slight discount will be given to the Sunday evening performance.

Open Tent originalmente quería presentar “Cortos de invierno” en el teatro de la preparatoria Mother Cabrini, pero el cierre de la escuela vetó ese plan.
“Era el único espacio asequible en Washington Heights para una pequeña compañía de teatro como la nuestra”, dijo. Continuaron buscando otros lugares en el norte del condado pero al final encontraron su solución en el centro.
Open Tent espera encontrar un espacio escénico en el norte del condado para sus próximas producciones de verano, y el grupo está planeando otro festival de obra de 24 horas y una posible presentación al aire libre.
“Cortos de invierno” se presentará en varias ocasiones durante el fin de semana del Súper Tazón. Un pequeño descuento se les dará a los que asistan a la función del domingo por la noche.
