The Cohiba can wait.
As relations between Cuba and United States warm, there are those dreaming of boarding the next flight to Havana to line their pockets with a few of the country’s famed cigars.
But aficionados en el Alto know they can still keep it local.
And now they can indulge their fix in more than one Northern Manhattan spot.
Inwood’s Q Cigars on Broadway remains a go-to destination for the heady and aromatic cigars, made from rich tobacco harvested straight from family-owned plantations in the Dominican Republic, among other places.
This past Fri., Jan. 16th, the company opened its second shop in Northern Manhattan, on Columbus Avenue, celebrating with a festive inaugural reception.
Owner Karina Portes welcomed guests at the new shop with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and, naturally, cigars.
She explained that the site was carefully selected after thorough research that involved feedback from the company’s loyal clientele.
“We conducted a survey,” she explained. “We realized that many [of our clients] live around this neighborhood.”
The family business is a long-held tradition that dates back over a century.
Founded in 1891, the company is still run by various generations of Portes kin involved in its day-to-day operations.
Kevin Portes, Katrina’s brother, is the only male child among the six children.
He beamed as he surveyed the packed scene.
“There is nothing like this in the area,” he said. “It is a good neighborhood.”
Regular smoker Peter Mamais agreed.
“It is a convenient walk for a nice smoke.”
“I think it is good for the neighborhood,” echoed Cab Cabernet, who has known the Portes family for years. “Location is everything.”
Q Cigars has another shop in downtown Newark, New Jersey. Some patrons, including Myrtle Wilson, traveled from the Garden State for the opening.
“I love the cigar culture,” said Wilson. “You get to meet people from all walks of life.”
The camaraderie, she said, was what mattered.
“It is a true brotherhood and sisterhood,” she said. “Once you connect with somebody over a good cigar, it is like you are bonding for life.”
The quality of Q Cigars also seems to provide reason for fervor.
The cigars are rolled during various stages of the aging process and with various blends from Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Honduras, Nicaragua and, of course, the Dominican Republic.
“I smoked Cuban cigars and these are just as good,” said Joe Lorino, an avid smoker of over twenty years.
“The cigars are excellent,” concurred Jimmie Gasparini. “So smooth, so flawless.”
Kilis Portes, Karina’s sister, came out also to show support.
And yes, she is an oncology nurse.
She was quick to note that her family bias aside, “nothing in moderation is bad.”

Los Cohiba pueden esperar.
A medida que las relaciones entre Cuba y Estados Unidos se vuelven más cálidas, hay algunos que sueñan con abordar el próximo vuelo a La Habana para llenar sus bolsillos con algunos de los famosos puros de la isla-nación.
Pero los aficionados en el Alto saben que aún pueden mantener su hábito local.
Y ahora pueden disfrutar de su dosis en más de un lugar del Norte de Manhattan.
Inwood’s Q Cigars, en Broadway, sigue siendo uno de los lugares favoritos para encontrar los cigarros más emocionantes y aromáticos, hechos de rico tabaco cosechado directamente de las plantaciones familiares en la República Dominicana, entre otros lugares.
La compañía abrió su segunda tienda en el norte de Manhattan, en la avenida Columbus, celebrando el pasado viernes 16 de enero una festiva recepción inaugural.
La propietaria Karina Portes dio la bienvenida a los invitados en la nueva tienda con cócteles, aperitivos y, naturalmente, cigarros.
Explicó que el sitio para la segunda tienda fue cuidadosamente seleccionado después de una exhaustiva investigación que incluyó comentarios de clientes leales a la compañía.
“Llevamos a cabo una encuesta”, explicó. “Nos dimos cuenta de que muchos [de nuestros clientes] viven alrededor de este barrio”.
La empresa familiar es una larga tradición que se remonta más de un siglo atrás.
Fundada en 1891, la compañía es aún dirigida por varias generaciones de parientes Portes involucrados en sus operaciones del día a día.
Kevin Portes, el hermano de Karina, es el único varón de seis hijos.
Sonreía mientras observaba el lugar lleno de gente.
“No hay nada como esto en el área”, dijo. “Es un buen barrio”.
El fumador habitual Peter Mamais estuvo de acuerdo.
“Es un cómodo paseo para una fumada agradable”.
“Creo que es bueno para el barrio”, dijo Cab Cabernet, quien conoce a la familia Portes desde hace años. “La ubicación es todo”.
Q Cigars tiene otra tienda en el centro de Newark, Nueva Jersey. Algunos clientes, incluyendo Myrtle Wilson, viajaron desde el Garden State para la apertura.
“Me encanta la cultura del cigarro”, dijo Wilson. “Tienes la oportunidad de conocer a gente de todo tipo”.
La camaradería, dijo, es lo que importa.
“Es una verdadera hermandad”, comentó. “Una vez que te conectas con alguien durante un buen puro, es como si estuvieras haciendo una unión para toda la vida”.
La calidad de Q Cigars también parece ofrecer un motivo de fervor.
Los cigarros se ruedan durante las diversas etapas del proceso de envejecimiento y con diversas mezclas de Brasil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Honduras, Nicaragua y, por supuesto, la República Dominicana.
“Yo fumaba cigarros cubanos y estos son igual de buenos”, dijo Joe Lorino, un ávido fumador de más de veinte años.
“Los cigarros son excelentes”, coincidió Jimmie Gasparini. “Muy suaves e impecables”.
Kilis Portes, la hermana de Karina, salió en defensa.
Y sí, ella es enfermera de oncología.
Se apresuró a señalar, dejando de lado su parcialidad familiar, que “nada en moderación es malo”.
