Stroll hits stride

On Fri., May 29th, the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) launched its latest Uptown Arts Stroll with a kick-off event at the Sugar Hill development in West Harlem.
More than 200 guests attended the launch party, where awards were presented to 2015 honorees Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ty Jones, Andrea Arroyo and Eduardo Gómez.
The Stroll, which began 12 years ago as a single-day event, is now a month-long festival that showcases the talent of Northern Manhattan artists in all disciplines.
Among its primary sponsors are the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, The Manhattan Times, the West Harlem Development Corporation, the Harlem Community Development Corporation, and the Hispanic Federation.
Throughout the month of June, Washington Heights and Inwood’s galleries, parks, restaurants, public spaces and other venues will present exhibits and performances by a diverse array of local artists and innovators.
This year’s Arts Stroll extends into West Harlem for the first time. NoMAA has partnered with Broadway Housing Communities, which constructed the Sugar Hill affordable housing complex, as well as the soon-to-be-opened Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling.
At Friday’s event, City Councilmember Mark D. Levine presented an award to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony Award-winning creator of In The Heights and Hamilton.
Ty Jones, a Broadway actor and Producing Artistic Director of the Classical Theatre of Harlem, received an award from Manhattan Times publisher Luis Miranda.
Global Citizen Award artist Arroyo received a citation from Kofi Boateng, Executive Director of West Harlem Development Corporation; and Eduardo Gómez, Founder of the Washington Heights and Inwood (WaHI) online community website, was honored by Ana Ofelia Rodríguez, Executive Director of Broadway Housing.
Attendees also enjoyed performances by students from Statement Arts and Latin jazz music from Mario Persiani and Trio Cachimbo.

El viernes 29 de mayo, la Alianza de las Artes del Norte de Manhattan (NoMAA por sus siglas en inglés) lanzó su más reciente Paseo de las Artes con un evento inaugural en el desarrollo Sugar Hill en West Harlem.
Más de 200 invitados asistieron a la fiesta de inauguración, donde se entregaron premios a los galardonados del 2015: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ty Jones, Andrea Arroyo y Eduardo Gómez.
El Paseo de las Artes, que comenzó hace 12 años como un evento de un solo día, es ahora un festival de un mes de duración que muestra el talento de los artistas del norte de Manhattan en todas las disciplinas.
A lo largo del mes de junio, galerías, parques, restaurantes, espacios públicos y otros espacios de Washington Heights e Inwood, presentarán exposiciones y actuaciones de una gran variedad de artistas e innovadores locales.
Entre sus principales patrocinadores está la Zona de Mejoramiento del Alto Manhattan (UMEZ, por sus siglas en ingles), The Manhattan Times, la Corporación de Desarrollo del Oeste de Harlem, la Corporación de Desarrollo Comunitario de Harlem, y la Federación Hispana.
Por primers vez, el Paseo de las Artes de este año se extiende hacia West Harlem. NoMAA se asoció con Broadway Housing Communities, que construyó el complejo de vivienda asequible Sugar Hill, así como el -próximo a inaugurarse- Museo Infantil de Arte y Narración de Sugar Hill para esta celebración de apertura.
