Uptown Closing Night
The Corcho Wine Room and the group AAABeans will be closing out the Women in Latin Jazz series with final performances featuring local musician Annette A. Aguilar, Laura Dryer, and Carolina Calvache on Mon., Dec. 1st from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00p.m. It will be held at NoMAA, at the Cornerstone Center at 178 Bennett Avenue (189th Street). College Prep Program
Word Up’s first College Prep Program will be held every Thursday from 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. and will be conducted by a writing consultant from Columbia University. Each week, high school juniors and seniors will work on personal statements and college application and scholarship materials. Pay what you can. This program takes place at Word Up! Community Bookstore located at 2113 Amsterdam Avenue at West 165th Street.

Mayor’s Cup Wrestling Championship
New York City’s best high school wrestlers from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and independent schools will compete in the 2014-15 NYC Mayor’s Cup Wrestling Championships on Sat., Dec. 20th for a chance to be crowned the “Best in the City.” The tournament will take place at Riverbank State Park located at 145th Street and the Hudson River. Preliminary rounds start at 10:00 a.m. and the championship matches will commence at 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Holiday on the Hudson Tree Lighting
Join the members of the Riverside Park Conservancy for their holiday tree lighting party on Sat., Dec. 13th at 5:00 p.m. Celebrate the season with the local community, enjoy live music, make holiday decorations and more. The Holiday on the Hudson Tree Lighting will take place at 125th Street and Hudson River.

Language and Culture
On Mon., Dec. 15th, Pratt’s Communication Design student Eduardo Palma will showcase his interactive installation, a bilingual mural representing the dichotomy of rich and poor societies. His presentation will be followed by a conversation about the ways in which language and culture shape each other. Guest speakers joining Eduardo include Pratt professor, Ellery Washington, and visual artist, Shantell Martin, and will be moderated by journalist Maria Hinojosa. The program will start at 6:30 p.m., and is presented by Pratt Institute and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is located at 515 Malcolm X Boulevard.

Campeonato de Lucha Libre ‘Mayor’s Cup’
Los mejores luchadores de escuelas superiores de la ciudad de Nueva York de la Liga Atlética de Escuelas Públicas (PSAL, por sus siglas en inglés), la Asociación Atlética de Escuelas Superiores Católicas (CHSAA, por sus siglas en inglés) y escuelas independientes, competirán en los Campeonatos Mayor’s Cup Wrestling 2014-15 NYC el sábado, 20 de diciembre por la oportunidad de ser coronado el “Mejor en la Ciudad”. El torneo se celebrará en el Parque Riverbank localizado en la Calle 145 y el Río Hudson. Los encuentros preliminares comienzan a las 10:00 a.m. y las competencias de campeonato comenzarán a las 4:00 p.m. La entrada es gratis.

Fiesta en el Encendido del Árbol en el Hudson

Los oradores invitados que se unirán a Eduardo incluyen a la profesora de Pratt, Ellery Washington, y al artista visual Shantell Martin, y será moderada por la periodista María Hinojosa. El programa comenzará a las 6:30 p.m. y es presentado por el Instituto Pratt y el Centro Schomburg para la Investigación de la Cultura Negra. El Centro Schomburg está localizado en el 515 Malcolm X Boulevard.
