Wall Inspection Program begins
The Department of Building’s annual No-Penalty Retaining Wall Inspection Program begins Mon., May 7th and it runs through Sat., June 30th.
Under the program, New Yorkers can request a free inspection of their retaining wall without the threat of receiving a violation if the wall is found to be in poor condition. During inspections, Department inspectors will examine a wall’s structural conditions to check if there is any bulging, displaced material or if the wall is leaning. If repairs are needed, the Department will defer issuing violations to allow property owners time to take corrective action.
However, if dangerous conditions are found, the Department will take immediate action to make sure the unsafe conditions are corrected as soon as possible. Inspections can be requested between May 7 and June 30 by calling 311.
Private property owners with retaining walls are eligible.

Assemblymember Guillermo Linares announces candidacy for State Senate
This past Sun., May 6th, New York State Assemblymember Guillermo Linares announced his candidacy for the 31st State Senate seat. It is presently occupied by Sen. Adriano Espaillat, who is running against incumbent Congressman Charles B. Rangel for the newly created 13th Congressional district.
In a statement released over the weekend, Assemblymember Linares spoke to wanting to press forward with legislation that the State Senate often plays a decisive role in either blocking or advancing.
A key factor in his decision, he explained, was the New York Dream Act.
“Today, no battle is more important to me,” said Linares, who has served as New York City’s Immigrant Affairs Commissioner, “than the fight to make a college education possible for all immigrant children by passing the Dream Act in New York.”
“Whether the Dream Act passes this year or not—and I’m still very hopeful that it will—the need for strong voices in the State Senate for immigrant rights and aspirations has never been greater,” he added.
Employment and Small Business Opportunities Expo
The Hispanic Federation and Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez invite all community residents to an Employment and Small Business Opportunities Expo this Sat., May 19th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The Expo will be held at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Fort Washington Armory on the Hudson, located on 216 Fort Washington Avenue in northern Manhattan.

Volunteer opportunities with New York Cares
New York Cares invites local residents to become a New York Cares volunteer by attending a one-time orientation at John Jay College in Midtown on the afternoon of Thurs., May 10th.
There are approximately 1,200 projects citywide each month from which to choose. Among the many projects available is volunteering with the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation and helping connect immigrants with basic computer skills through the introduction of Microsoft Office and internet browsing on Saturday afternoons.

NY Youth Works Program presentation
New York State Assemblymember Guillermo Linares, together with New York City Councilmember Martin Collins, will present an information session on employment opportunities with the introduction of NY Youth Works Program to northern Manhattan
The session will be held on Thurs., May 17th at 3:00 p.m. at the Isabella Geriatric Center’s 525 Library at 525 Audubon Avenue in northern Manhattan. The session will include representatives from the New York State Department of Labor. The discussion will center on opportunities that involve:
- Local youths looking for jobs
- Local businesses which will receive up to $4,000 in tax credits
- Local youth service agencies that will facilitate job placement
