Rockin’ the Heights showcases alternative Dominican rock

Liverpool had John, Paul, George and Ringo.
The Heights have Carlin Castillo, Zeo Munoz and Angel Camilo.
Just like the Beatles brought their rock-and-roll to their native English streets, these three are hoping to establish an alternative rock presence here in the Heights.
They have come together and are collaborating on a new series at Arka Lounge that they hope will highlight a genre that has been making serious noise for local music lovers.
The three young men play alternative Dominican rock, and count Incubus, Coldplay, U2, Slipknot and Robi Draco Rosa among their many influences.
In the tradition of the best rockers out there, the three all write their own music, and play their own instruments.
Camilo, the frontman of A*Cam, plays second guitar, while Munoz plays synthesizer, guitar and harmonica, and Castillo plays guitar, bass and keyboard.
The three, however, do not play in the same band together.
Instead, they are the front men of three different area Spanish-language alt-rock bands.
Carlin Castillo is the lead on MaderaMetal, while Zeo Munoz heads his eponymously titled band, Zeo Munoz.
Their paths have intertwined before.
Castillo and Munoz played together in a band called RadioVector before taking on their present projects.
Now, Castillo and Munoz have quit their day jobs to pursue their musical careers, while Camilo still works as a graphic designer.
The three are friends and don’t consider each other rivals.
“We all admire each other’s work,” said Camilo with a wide grin.
In images and music videos, the three exude a too-cool-for-school rocker’s aura, but in person, all are relaxed and warm.
“We have individually been growing our own way, but if we unite forces we’ll be even better,” added Camilo.
“We’ve been talking about having a show together for years,” said Munoz.
That has led to Rockin’ the Heights, a showcase on Thurs., Dec. 6th at Arka Lounge, as each will take the stage.
Furthermore, to avoid promoting one over the others, they will be drawing cards to determine the line-up of the show.
Felix Salazar, who is producing the show, hopes it will turn into a monthly event, featuring different area bands, and reports that many musicians have already expressed interest.
In preparation for the show, they have worked as hard at spreading the word as they have on rehearsing.
They have been relying on Facebook and social media marketing to spread the word about their show.
And true to their natures, they have not been above being provocative to get their point across.
Many who have found out about the show may have stumbled across the searing image of the three musicians stark naked.
In the image, they look quite comfortable with themselves, with nothing but a few mannequins obscuring each’s manhood for the entire world to see.
“We wanted to do something different that hasn’t been seen in the community,” said Salazar. “We wanted to express that you can be what you want to be, not censoring creativity because of what society tells us.”
The rockers admit being a little fretful about the shoot originally, in anticipation of people’s reactions, but went ahead with it anyway.
They say they have garnered many interesting reactions.
“Some people want to know if we’re going to perform naked,” said Camilo.
They are not.
And many of the mostly positive reactions have come from female fans—including their mothers.
“My mom loves it,” said Castillo.
“We’ve done enough crazy stuff through the years that this is what they expect,” said Camilo.

Liverpool tuvo a John, Paul, George y Ringo.
The Heights tienen a Carlin Castillo, Zeo Muñoz y Angel Camilo.
Del mismo modo que los Beatles llevaron el ‘rock and roll’ a sus calles en Inglaterra, estos tres tienen la esperanza de establecer una presencia rock alternativo aquí en The Heights, y han colaborado con una nueva serie en Arka Lounge, lo cual esperan habrá de destacar un género que ha estado calando entre los locales amantes de la música.
Los tres jóvenes interpretan rock dominicano alternativo en español, y cuentan Incubus, Coldplay, U2, Slipknot y Robi Draco Rosa entre sus diversas influencias.
En la tradición de los mejores rockeros que hay, los tres escriben su propia música, y tocan sus propios instrumentos.
Camilo, el líder de A*Cam, toca la segunda guitarra, mientras que Munoz toca el sintetizador, guitarra y armónica, y Castillo toca guitarra y teclado.
Pero los tres no tocan juntos en el mismo conjunto.
En su lugar, ellos son directores de tres conjuntos diferentes del área.
Zeo Muñoz y Carlin Castillo de Madera Metal, tocaban juntos en un conjunto llamado RadioVector antes de embarcarse en carreras individuales.
Castillo y Muñoz, han dejado sus empleos para proseguir sus carreras musicales. Camilo aun trabaja como diseñador gráfico.
Los tres son amigos y no se consideran rivales.
“Nosotros admiramos el trabajo del otro”, dijo Camilo, con un gesto que revela su emoción con el espectáculo.
En imágenes y videos musicales, los tres irradian una aureola de ‘too-cool-for-school’, pero en persona, todos se muestran relajados y cálidos.
“Hemos estado creciendo de manera individual a nuestro modo, pero si aunamos fuerzas, seremos mejores aun”, agregó Camilo.
“Durante años hemos estado conversando sobre el hacer un espectáculo juntos”, dijo Muñoz.
Así nació Rockin’ in the Heights, un espectáculo el jueves 6 de diciembre en Arka Lounge, en el cual cada uno estará en el escenario.
Además, para evitar promover a uno por encima del otro, determinarán el orden de presentación al azar.
Félix Salazar, quien produce el espectáculo, espera este se convierta en un evento mensual, presentando a diferentes conjuntos del área, e informa que ya muchos músicos han mostrado su interés.
En preparación para el espectáculo, han trabajado tan arduamente en promoverlo como lo han hecho en los ensayos.
Ellos han estado dependiendo de Facebook y el mercadeo provocativo para difundir su espectáculo.
Muchos que se han enterado del espectáculo puede que se hayan encontrado con la mordaz imagen de los tres músicos desnudos.
En la imagen, ellos se muestran muy cómodos consigo mismos, sin nada más que unos pocos maniquíes disimulando su hombría, para la vista de todo el mundo.
“Queríamos hacer algo diferente, que no haya sido visto en la comunidad”, dijo Salazar. “Nosotros queríamos expresar que usted puede ser lo que quiera ser, no censurando la creatividad porque la sociedad nos lo dicte”.
Los rockeros admiten haber estado poco inquietos por la filmación, así como por las reacciones del público, pero prosiguieron de todos modos.
Ellos dicen que han provocado muchas reacciones interesantes.
“Alguna gente desea saber si vamos a interpretar desnudos”, expreso Camilo.
No lo van a hacer.
Y muchas de las reacciones, mayormente positivas, han venido de sus fanáticas femeninas—incluyendo a sus madres.
“A mi madre le encanta”, dijo Castillo.
“Con el paso de los años, hemos hecho suficientes locuras como para que esperaran esto”, dijo Camilo.
Ciertamente, cuando su hijo es un rockero, esperan que sucedan todo tipo de cosas.
