Advocates protest Manhattan Institute
Homeless people and their allies led a rally at the Manhattan Institute this past Wed., Dec. 11th and marched inside the organization’s offices to demand a public debate of the law enforcement policies advocated by the Institute.
They held signs painted with bloody handprints and posted signs critical of the Institute’s work.
“Broken windows policing, this horrible practice that’s been killing people, started right here,” charged Marcus Moore, of the Bronx-based advocacy group Picture the Homeless (PTH). “We’re going after the Manhattan Institute because we need to bring recognition that ‘broken windows’ policing is killing people, and it started here at the Manhattan Institute, and it must stop.”
Manhattan Institute representatives did not respond to calls for a public debate. Security was summoned and ejected protesters from the office.
“For too long, the police reform movement has gone after the puppets—the elected officials and police commissioners who do the bidding of right-wing billionaire-funded think tanks like the Manhattan Institute,” said PTH Board Member Jean Rice. “It’s time we start going after the puppeteers.”
After the sidewalk rally, homeless activists led a march to Penn Station, where they staged an eleven-minute “die -in” at the center of the busy transit hub – one minute for every time Eric Garner said “I can’t breathe”.
“I’m protesting because I’m a person of color,” said homeless activist Darlene Bryant. “I don’t appreciate the way people behind the scenes get to pick and choose when and how I have rights.”

Las personas sin hogar y sus aliados condujeron un mitin en el Instituto Manhattan el pasado miércoles 11 de diciembre y marcharon dentro de las oficinas de la organización para exigir un debate público sobre las políticas de aplicación de la ley propugnadas por el Instituto.
Sostuvieron carteles pintados con huellas de manos ensangrentadas y colocaron letreros críticos de la labor del Instituto.
“La política Broken Windows, esta práctica horrible que ha estado matando gente, comenzó aquí”, acusó Marcus Moore, del grupo de defensa con sede en Bronx Picture the Homeless (PTH). “Vamos tras el Instituto Manhattan porque tenemos que reconocer que la política Broken Windows está matando gente, que comenzó aquí en el Instituto Manhattan y debe detenerse”.
Representantes del Instituto Manhattan no respondieron a las llamadas de un debate público. Llamaron a seguridad y los manifestantes fueron expulsados de la oficina.
“Durante demasiado tiempo el movimiento de reforma de la policía ha ido tras los títeres: los funcionarios electos y los comisionados de policía que cumplen las órdenes de derechistas multimillonarios que financian think tanks como el Instituto Manhattan”, dijo el miembro de la Junta de PTH, Jean Rice. “Es hora de empezar a perseguir a los titiriteros”.
Después de la manifestarse en la acera, los activistas sin hogar encabezaron una marcha a Penn Station, donde protagonizaron “un die-in” de once minutos en el centro del ocupado eje de tránsito, un minuto por cada vez que Eric Garner dijo: “No puedo respirar”.
“Estoy protestando porque soy una persona de color”, dijo la activista sin hogar Darlene Bryant. “No me gusta la forma en que las personas detrás de los escenarios eligen cuándo y cómo tengo derechos”.
