UC Recap – May 27 – June 1

 May 27 – June 1

We did it again Uptown. The 2019 Uptown Arts Stroll opening reception was a rousing success. The event not only honored such Uptown stalwarts as Mino Lora, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Hike The Heights and Obrien Luna, but Uptown super-hero, Lin-Manuel Miranda, made a special appearance as promised. The energy in the opulent United Palace on Tuesday, May 28 was something special; community, joy and Uptown Love in abundance. The homie Kelvin Grullon did a bang up job of hosting the festivities. Much praises also go out to Jazz Power Initiative for putting on a stellar show. Shout out to Hennessy for providing the sublime libations, one of which was called In The Heights. The Uptown Arts Stroll has begun, people, so make sure you hit up www.artstroll.com so you don’t miss none of the art awesomeness taking place Uptown. Once again, shout out to the indispensable Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA). I had the privilege and honor of interviewing the dynamic duo of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Luis Miranda for the Manhattan Times at the opening reception of the Uptown Arts Stroll.

The lower Heights has a new spot that you just have to check out, Merienda Snack Bar (2192 Amsterdam Ave). The place is super cozy, cool and the staff really goes out of their way to make sure you enjoy your time there.

The latest episode in I Love My Hood’s Humans of the Hood series features dj extraordinaire Sunny Cheba. Sunny Cheba is part of the mighty Uptown Vinyl Supreme movement, which has led to a resurgence of digging in the crates. Check it out on the site ASAP.

Film Works Alfresco is now in effect at the bucolic Inwood Hill Park every Monday until August 12. Free films under the stars in the nicest park in the world; what more could you ask for? May 24 was the birthday of the late Heavy D. I penned an ode to the overweight lover and how one of his songs helped me cope with my wife’s cancer diagnosis over 10 years ago. Taste of Uptown goes down on June 8 at La Casa Del Mofongo (546 West 207th Street). Shout out to Washington Heights BID for putting together this awesome event for all the Uptown foodies.
