The Uptown Collective – The Recap 3-17 to 3-22

By Led Black

March 17 – March 22

Did you know that Washington Heights boasts a palace? Yes, an actual palace. Indeed, the United Palace, on 175th and Broadway, is the people’s palace. Built in 1929 by noted theatre architect Thomas Lamb, the United Palace is the only true Movie Palace that still exists in Manhattan. The theater at the Palace has 3,400 seats, making it Manhattan’s third largest after Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall.

Last year, the community raised nearly 50 K in 40 days to return film to the United Palace for the first time in 40 years. A transcendent movie experience is once again on tap Uptown. With that said, the next step in upgrading the Palace is obtaining an industry standard screen, to create an even better, more interactive, experience for the audience. Journalist Liseth Perez not only lost all her worldly possessions in the devastating East Harlem building explosion but she also lost, the love of her life, her husband, Andreas Panagopoulos. The New York City chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists has started a crowd-funding campaign to help one of their own in her time of need. This was also a big week for Uptown Music, so let’s get right to it. First of all, we posted the new video from Ace IOD of the mighty IOD camp, Substance. The one and only Tess dropped a gorgeous video for the infectious Morphine. Live YBG’s Eckz also has a new video for Terraceville. Be on the lookout for a Selena mashup mixtape from Eckz that drops April 16th. Lastly, we posted the new video from Dominican Rap underground giant, Guariboa, entitled Camaleon.

We were also quite busy on the Uptown Video front. The Comedy Girls, Jenni Ruiza and Jesenia, posted a barbed response to the lack of Latinos on SNL. Uptown own’s Audubon entered The Hot Box hosted by Hot 97’s DJ Enuff to talk Uptown and let loose a verse or two. Project Bronx took to the streets of the Bronx to talk about race, love and Interracial Relationships.
