Continuing an annual tradition of nearly two decades, State Senator Adriano Espaillat is inviting residents to join with local elected officials, community leaders and fellow marchers for a pre-parade breakfast at La Marina in Inwood. This Sun., Aug. 14, just before the parade kick-off downtown at 12 noon, Espaillat and the Northern Manhattan Democrats for Change will host the 18th Annual Dominican Day Parade Breakfast and serve hundreds a buffet of eggs, toast, coffee and, of course, mangu. The latter, a savory plaintain mash served with red onions, is a staple of Dominican breakfasts. Espaillat, who recently won the 13th Congressional primary and is poised to become the first Dominican member of Congress, sponsors the morning gathering each year in advance of the parade, which makes its way up Sixth Avenue, from 38th to 52ndStreets. This year’s Grand Marshal is Grammy Award winner and international music icon Juan Luis Guerra. At the event, Luis Miranda Jr., Publisher of The Manhattan Times and The Bronx Free Press, will be presented with the Juan Pablo Duarte Award, honoring his commitment to the Dominican community and to Northern Manhattan. The breakfast will also feature speeches from numerous elected officials, including Congressman Charles Rangel, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Public Advocate Letitia James, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, New York State Controller Tom DiNapoli, Assemblymember Denny Farrell, Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, Councilmember Mark Levine and Councilmember Julissa Ferreras-Copeland. Este domingo 14 de agosto, justo antes de la inauguración del desfile en el centro las 12 del mediodía, Espaillat y los Demócratas del Norte de Manhattan por el Cambio organizarán el 18° Desayuno Anual del Día del Desfile Dominicano, y servirán a cientos un bufet de huevos, pan tostado, café y, por supuesto, mangu. Este último, un puré de plátano salado servido con cebollas rojas, es un elemento básico de los desayunos dominicanos. Espaillat, quien recientemente ganó la primaria del Congreso 13° y está a punto de convertirse en el primer dominicano miembro del Congreso, patrocina la reunión matutina cada año antes del desfile, el cual llega hasta la Sexta Avenida, de la Calle 38 a la 52. Este año, el Gran Mariscal es el ganador del premio Grammy e icono internacional musical, Juan Luis Guerra.
