Fire relief efforts move forward

Nearly 100 residents, community leaders, first responders and those affected by a Harlem fire on West 136th Street were in attendance this past Thurs., Aug. 28th at the Annunciation Church. They gathered for an update held by Councilmember Mark Levine and community groups on current relief efforts.
The fire, which took place on the evening of Mon., Aug. 18th, left one teenager dead.
The victim was identified as 15-year-old Melissa Méndez.
Additionally, eleven residents were injured and roughly sixty residents were displaced.
Councilmember Levine discussed the outpouring of support the community had shown the families affected.
“We’ve now received what we estimate to be a ton of donated clothing and goods,” said Councilmember Levine. “All the kinds of things these families are going to need to get their lives back together.”
“The entire parish has felt the pain of the families,” said Reverend Baltazar Sánchez. “We’ve been praying with the Méndez family through this ordeal.”
The Méndez family members were no strangers to the church, he explained.
“Melissa was very active in the church,” added Sánchez. “She was a member of the theater group and she always used to sing.”
Sánchez also disclosed that while the church had been collecting donations to help the Méndez family with funeral expenses, an anonymous family had stepped up to cover those expenses in their entirety. The money collected from the church, which totaled $12,000, will instead to directly go to Bacilla Méndez, Melissa’s mother, to cover the host of other expenses that lie ahead.
JetBlue has also given the Méndez family seven round trip tickets to the Dominican Republic, where Melissa is to be buried.
Donations were plentiful on the second floor, where affected residents were able to pick up needed items that ranged from shoes and clothing to canned foods and formula.
“People just came in and left a lot of donations,” said Nicole Rodríguez, a volunteer from P.A.’L.A.N.T.E. Harlem, a tenants’ advocacy organization. “A lot of people donated. I hope it’s enough for everybody.”
“This entire community has rallied [and] has been absolutely extraordinary,” said Josh Lockwood, CEO of the American Red Cross, Greater New York Region.
“From the church to the Councilman’s office, to the not for profit agencies, offering their services, it’s truly been a community coming together to serve those in need.”
Councilmember Levine noted that efforts would continue.
“This crisis is not over, our families and our neighbors face a long road ahead to making their lives whole again,” he said. “So please, everyone, keep the generosity coming.”
“This is a blessing from God and the people,” said a somber Bacilla Méndez.
“I have faith. That helps me to get by.”
Donations made directly to the Méndez family:
- Over $3,000 was raised by members of the Annunciation Church
- $2,000 was committed by Manhattan North Management
- $1,500 from Catholic Charities
- $1,000 from West Harlem Group Assistance
- $500 was donated by local FDNY stateions Ladder 23 and Engine 80 combined
- Seven round-trip flight vouchers donated by JetBlue
Donations for all affected families included:
- Dozens of donations of clothing, kitchen supplies and other houseware items
- More than $4,000, with donations from over 100 people, to a fund created by the West Harlem Group Assistance; the Méndez family will receive $500 and the others will receive $185 each
- The Tzu Chi foundation provided financial aid of $100 for each family member, with a maximum of $300 per family, and $500 for the family of the deceased
- The Salvation Army contributed a voucher packet redeemable for clothing and furniture of $100 for each family member, with a maximum of $300 per family
- P.A.’L.A.N.T.E. Harlem and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development have agreed to assist victims with securing long-term housing

Avanzan los esfuerzos de ayuda por incendio

Cerca de 100 residentes, líderes comunitarios, socorristas y los afectados por un incendio en Harlem en la calle 136 oeste, estuvieron presentes el pasado jueves 28 de agosto en la Iglesia de la Anunciación. Se reunieron para recibir información actualizada del concejal Mark Levine y de los grupos de la comunidad que actualmente realizan esfuerzos de ayuda.
El incendio, que tuvo lugar en la tarde del lunes 18 de agosto, dejó una adolescente muerta.
La víctima fue identificada como Melissa Méndez de 15 años de edad.
Además, once residentes resultaron heridos y unos sesenta fueron desplazados.
El concejal Levine analizó el gran apoyo que la comunidad mostró a las familias afectadas.
“Hemos recibido lo que estimamos es una tonelada de ropa y artículos donados”, dijo el concejal Levine. “Todas las cosas que estas familias van a necesitar para rehacer sus vidas”.
“Toda la parroquia ha sentido el dolor de las familias”, dijo el reverendo Baltazar Sánchez. “Hemos estado orando con la familia Méndez durante esta terrible experiencia”.
Los miembros de la familia Méndez no eran extraños a la iglesia, explicó.
“Melissa era muy activa en la iglesia”, añadió Sánchez. “Era miembro del grupo de teatro y siempre solía cantar”.
Sánchez también reveló que aunque la iglesia recolectó donaciones para ayudar a la familia Méndez con los gastos del funeral, una familia anónima se ofreció para cubrir esos gastos en su totalidad. El dinero recaudado por la iglesia, que asciende a $12,000 dólares, irá directamente a Bacilla Méndez, madre de Melissa, para cubrir los otros gastos que se avecinan.
JetBlue también ha dado a la familia Méndez siete boletos de ida y vuelta a la República Dominicana, donde Melissa será enterrada.
Las donaciones abundaron en el segundo piso, donde los residentes afectados pudieron recoger los elementos necesarios, desde zapatos y ropa hasta alimentos enlatados y fórmula.
“La gente simplemente entró y dejó una gran cantidad de donaciones”, dijo Nicole Rodríguez, una voluntaria de P.A.’L.A.N.T.E. Harlem, organización de defensa de inquilinos. “Mucha gente donó. Espero que sea suficiente para todos”.
“Toda esta comunidad se ha reunido [y] ha sido absolutamente extraordinaria”, dijo Josh Lockwood, CEO de la Cruz Roja Americana de Nueva York.
“Desde la iglesia y la oficina del concejal, hasta las agencias sin fines de lucro, que ofrecen sus servicios, ha sido verdaderamente una comunidad unida para servir a los necesitados”.
El concejal Levine señaló que los esfuerzos continuarán.
“Esta crisis no ha terminado, nuestras familias y vecinos enfrentan un largo camino por delante hasta rehacer sus vidas de nuevo”, dijo. “Así que por favor, todo el mundo, mantenga la generosidad”.
“Esto es una bendición de Dios y la gente”, dijo una sombría Bacilla Méndez.
“Tengo fe. Eso me ayuda a sobrevivir”.
