The Dominican Studies Institute marks 20 years

Time to mark a milestone.
The Dominican Studies Institute (DSI) of the City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s first university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican heritage, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Based at The City College of New York, DSI’s mission is to produce and disseminate research about Dominicans and the Dominican Republic.
“I think that the Institute is ‘el corazón’ — it’s the heart of intellectual study of the Dominican diaspora,” remarked Jay Hershenson, Senior Vice Chancellor at CUNY. The Institute houses the Dominican Archives, a repository of materials documenting the Dominican experience in the United States, and a library with more than 4,000 books and 8,000 articles from academic journals.
Intended to make bibliographical sources available for assisting research into Dominican history, the library boasts 750 doctoral and masters’ dissertations, explained Hershenson.
“Our library and archives are one of a kind,” stated Dr. Ramona Hernández, Ph.D., Director of DSI and Professor of Sociology at The City College of New York.
“In a central location, historians are able to find the sources to write about Dominicans.” Dr. Hernández said that DSI is constantly seeking out new archival items to acquire — a significant task, as the Institute typically does not use funding to purchase collections. Many items are personal documents that illustrate the lives of Dominican immigrants in America.
“If you ask me, that is one of our greatest achievements,” she said. “One hundred years from now, those stories can still be told.”
“The Dominican Studies Institute has nurtured thousands of ambitious students in its history,” said State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who has played a key role in securing funding to help operate the center. “It also has a terrific track record for producing original research on the Dominican diaspora that has been used by policymakers, journalists and countless others.”
On Sat., Dec. 6th, a Gala will be held at City College to commemorate DSI’s 20th anniversary.
The event will also serve as a fundraiser to assist DSI’s operations, as well as a means to acknowledge the many Dominican alumni from CUNY.
Dr. Hernández said that more than 500 Dominican graduates are expected to attend. “For a community that began with a very low rate of education, that is a very important number,” she commented.
Hershenson said that since DSI was founded, CUNY has seen a sharp spike in the enrollment of students with Dominican heritage.
“Right now, we have upwards of 26,000 Dominican American students taking classes with us,” he explained.
According to Dr. Hernández, Dominicans who attend CUNY tend to motivate others in their family to do the same, strengthening the Institute’s bond with the community.
“We’ve seen as many as seven people in the same Dominican family attend the university,” she remarked.
In 2010, DSI launched a gallery to present programming that highlights its archival collections, and is also open to outside art exhibitions.
“Having a diversity of events is important, because we get to present a diversity of opinions,” said Dr. Hernández.
The DSI gallery is the first exhibition space in New York City dedicated to work by artists of Dominican descent.
“By hosting so many lectures, conferences, and art exhibitions, the Institute has really enhanced its profile,” noted Hershenson.
“The Dominican community in New York has been bettered by the existence of the Institute, and so has the city in general.”

El Instituto de Estudios Dominicanos marca 20 años

Es hora de marcar un hito.
El Instituto de Estudios Dominicano (DSI por sus siglas en inglés), de City University de Nueva York (CUNY), el primer instituto universitario de investigación de la nación dedicado al estudio de las personas de origen dominicano, está celebrando su 20do aniversario este año.
Ubicado en el City College de Nueva York, la misión de DSI es producir y difundir investigaciones sobre los dominicanos y la República Dominicana.
“Creo que el instituto es el corazón del estudio intelectual de la diáspora dominicana”, comentó Jay Hershenson, vice canciller senior de CUNY. El instituto alberga los Archivos Dominicanos, un repositorio de materiales que documenta la experiencia dominicana en los Estados Unidos, y una biblioteca con más de 4,000 libros y 8,000 artículos de revistas académicas.
Destinado para que las fuentes bibliográficas estén disponibles para ayudar en la investigación de la historia dominicana, la biblioteca cuenta con 750 tesis de doctorado y de maestría, dijo Hershenson.
“Nuestra biblioteca y los archivos son únicos”, declaró la Dra. Ramona Hernández, Ph.D., directora de DSI y profesora de Sociología en el City College de Nueva York.
“En una ubicación central, los historiadores son capaces de encontrar las fuentes para escribir sobre los dominicanos”.
La Dra. Hernández dijo que DSI está en constante búsqueda de nuevos elementos de archivo para adquirirlos, una tarea importante ya que el instituto normalmente no utiliza fondos para la compra de colecciones. Muchos artículos son documentos personales que ilustran la vida de los inmigrantes dominicanos en Estados Unidos.
“Si usted me pregunta, ese es uno de nuestros mayores logros”, dijo la Dra. Hernández.
“En cien años, esas historias pueden todavía ser contadas”.
“El Instituto de Estudios Dominicanos ha alimentado a miles de estudiantes ambiciosos en su historia”, dijo el senador estatal Adriano Espaillat, quien ha jugado un papel clave para obtener financiamiento para ayudar a operar el centro. “También tiene un historial excelente de producir investigaciones originales sobre la diáspora dominicana que ha sido utilizada por políticos, periodistas y muchos otros”.
El sábado 6 de diciembre se llevará a cabo una gala en el City College para conmemorar el 20 aniversario del DSI.
El evento también servirá para recaudar fondos que ayuden a las operaciones de DSI, así como un medio para reconocer a los muchos ex alumnos dominicanos de CUNY.
Hernández dijo que se espera que más de 500 egresados dominicanos asistan.
“Para una comunidad que comenzó con una tasa educativa muy baja, es un número muy importante”, comentó.
Hershenson dijo que desde que el DSI fue fundado, CUNY ha registrado un fuerte aumento en la matrícula de los estudiantes con herencia dominicana. “En este momento tenemos más de 26,000 estudiantes dominicano americanos tomando clases con nosotros”, explicó.
De acuerdo con la Dra. Hernández, los dominicanos que asisten a CUNY tienden a motivar a otros en su familia a hacer lo mismo, fortaleciendo el lazo del instituto con la comunidad.
“Hemos visto hasta siete personas de la misma familia dominicana asistiendo a la universidad”, comentó.
En 2010, DSI inauguró una galería para presentar programación que destaque sus colecciones de archivos, y también está abierta para exposiciones externas de arte.
“Tener diferentes eventos es importante, porque nos permite presentar una diversidad de opiniones”, dijo la Dra. Hernández.
La galería DSI es el primer espacio de exhibición en la ciudad de Nueva York dedicado al trabajo de artistas de origen dominicano.
“Al organizar tantas charlas, conferencias y exposiciones de arte, el instituto realmente ha mejorado su perfil”, señaló Hershenson.
“La comunidad dominicana en Nueva York ha mejorado por la existencia del Instituto, y también lo ha hecho la ciudad en general”.
