Chamber Breakfast
The Chamber of Commerce of Washington Heights-Inwood cordially invites community residents to attend a breakfast meeting on Mon., Sept. 30th at 8:30 a.m. at Isabella Geriatric Center, located at 515 Audubon Avenue on West 190th Street. The guest speaker is New York State Assemblymember Gabriella Rosa. Additionally, there will be a presentation on the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care).

Art Reception
Artist Carlos Martínez Domínguez, known as FEEGZ, will present part of his exhibit, “Displaced Vandalism NYC,” at the office of Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez. The presentation will be marked with an opening night reception on Wed., Sept. 25th at 6 p.m. at Councilmember’s Rodríguez’s office, located at 618 West 177th Street, Ground Floor. FEEGZ’s work was featured this year in the Uptown Arts Stroll and this will be the last opportunity to see it before the exhibit travels to the Dominican Republic.

Free Literacy Program
Starting Thurs., Sept. 19th, a free family literacy program will be hosted at the YM-YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood. The program will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The goal of the program is to engage the whole family in reading, writing and art. It consists of workshops where families discover exciting books together, work on creative literacy-based projects and learn games and activities that build stronger language and learning skills. It is intended to help strengthen community bonds and offers children and parents alike the opportunity to gain positive, memorable interactions with literacy. There is also a free healthy dinner each night. The program is funded by the Brooke Jackman Foundation, established after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center to honor the memory of Brooke (www.brookejackmanfoundation.org).

Recepción de Arte

La presentación será marcada con una recepción de apertura el miércoles, 25 de septiembre a las 6:00 p.m. en la oficina del Concejal Rodríguez, localizada en el 618 Oeste de la Calle 177, Primer Piso. El trabajo de FEEGS fue presentado este año en el Paseo de las Artes del Alto Manhattan y esta será la última oportunidad de verla antes de que la exhibición viaje a la República Dominicana.

Programa gratuito de alfabetización
Comenzando el jueves, 19 de septiembre, un programa gratuito de alfabetización será auspiciado en la YM-YWHA de Washington Heights e Inwood. El programa se llevará a cabo los martes y jueves en la noche de 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. La meta del programa es animar a toda la familia a leer, escribir y al arte. Consiste de talleres donde las familias descubren emocionantes libros juntos, trabajan en proyectos creativos de alfabetización y aprenden juegos y actividades que construyen un lenguaje más fuerte y destrezas de aprendizaje. Es con la intención de ayudar a fortalecer los lazos comunales y ofrecerle a los niños y padres una cena saludable cada noche. El programa es subvencionado por la Fundación ‘Brooke Jackman’, establecida luego de los ataques del 9/11 al World Trade Center para honrar la memoria de Brooke. (www.brookejackmanfoundation.org).
