A “noble” narrative

Human nature, the lore of forests and history all take center
stage in a new production, Anima Animal, by acclaimed
Argentine dancer Herman Cornejo.
His latest production, in collaboration with Grupo Cadabra, will
be headed to the Joyce Theater for its U.S. premiere. The
shows will run from February 18 to 23, 2025, marking the start
of the theater’s winter season.

Anima Animal combines history, culture, and contemporary
reflection, while paying tribute to the legendary Russian ballet
dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. The new dance
performance seeks to explore the connection between humanity
and nature and follows a man’s journey of self-discovery as he
embraces “noble” animal instincts.
In 1917, Nijinsky was invited to stage Caapora, a ballet-inspired
by the Guaraní legend of the mystical Urutau bird, dweller of
Argentina’s forests. Illness prevented Nijinsky from completing
the work, which remained unfinished.

Considered one of the most influential dancers of his
generation, Cornejo has been recognized for his talents in in classical and
contemporary dance from early on.

At age 16, he won the Gold Medal at the VIII International Competition in Moscow, becoming the youngest dancer in history to receive the prestigious award.

In 1998, he joined the ABT Studio Company, and a year later, the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). In 2000, he was promoted to soloist, and in 2003, to principal dancer.
Inspired by Nijinsky’s uncompleted work, the new production by Cornejo blends dance, mythology, and reflection on the human condition. It revives Nijinsky’s last professional interest, closing a century of ballet history while honoring his unfinished legacy.

Co-produced with the Teatro del Bicentenario (San Juan,
Argentina) in 2022, Anima Animal features choreography by award-winning Anabella Tuliano, an original score by composers Luis Maurette and Noelia Escalzo.

historia toman protagonismo en una nueva producción, Anima Animal, del aclamado bailarín argentino Herman Cornejo.
Su última producción, en colaboración con Grupo Cadabra, se
dirigirá al Joyce Theatre para su estreno en Estados Unidos.
Los espectáculos se presentarán del 18 al 23 de febrero de 2025, marcando el inicio de la temporada de invierno del teatro Joyce.

Anima Animal combina historia, cultura y reflexión contemporánea, al tiempo que rinde homenaje al legendario
bailarín y coreógrafo ruso Vaslav Nijinsky.

El nuevo espectáculo de danza busca explorar la conexión entre la humanidad y la naturaleza y sigue el viaje de autodescubrimiento de un hombre mientras abraza los instintos animales “nobles”.
En 1917, Nijinsky fue invitado a representar Caapora, un ballet

de Cornejo fusiona danza, mitología y reflexión sobre la
condición humana. Reaviva el último interés profesional de
Nijinsky, cerrando un siglo de historia del ballet y al mismo
tiempo honrando su legado inconcluso.
Coproducida con el Teatro del Bicentenario (San Juan,
Argentina) en 2022, Anima Animal presenta coreografía de la galardonada Anabella Tuliano, una partitura original de los
compositores Luis Maurette y Noelia Escalzo.
