UC Recap – September 25 – September 30

Trump has done it again. While a looming humanitarian crisis took shape in Puerto Rico, after the devastation left in the wake of back-to-back super hurricanes, Trump spent all of last week chastising Black athletes for being – in his sick and twisted mind – unpatriotic, ungrateful and for not knowing their place. On Saturday, this man had the unmitigated gall to attack the mayor of San Juan Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto who has risked life, limb and reputation to bring relief and resources to her people. In contrast to Trump, Cruz has been a shining example of the power and importance of leadership. In fact, her poise, purpose and passion have grabbed the attention of the entire world and has put a much needed spotlight on the dire plight of Puerto Ricans. She was even immortalized in an SNL skit that once again featured a dead-on impression of Trump by Alec Baldwin. For many, Trump’s negative tweets about the mayor only added insult to injury. I think hometown hero Lin-Manuel Miranda spoke for many when he responded to Trump in Twitter: “You’re going straight to hell, @realDonaldTrump.” Well said, Lin, well said. We also can’t forget our Mexican brethren in their time of need. Andrea Arroyo and her husband Felipe Galindo (Feggo) have created several prints that will be sold to raise funds for disaster relief. The 17th Annual Brides March was held this Tuesday, Sept. 26th, as hundreds of women marched through uptown to take a stand against domestic violence. The annual event pays tribute to Gladys Ricart, who was murdered on her wedding day in 1999 by an abusive former boyfriend. Check out some of the images at The Manhattan Times. NPR talked to David Barclay Moore about his new novel for young readers The Stars Beneath Our Feet. This past weekend the 2nd annual Trade/itions extravaganza went down in Harlem. Please check out the recap of this important cultural event. Our end of summer sale is on its last days. Use the Discount Code SUMMERBLUES for FREE shipping and a little regalito.
