June 4 – June 9
Okay folks, we are having our 2-year anniversary bash at Negro Claro (3805 10th Ave) on Thursday, June 14th from 8 pm to 4 am. Open Bar from 8 to 9 pm. $10 Dollars at the door! Live art, great people, good vibes! Recording artists Oveous, Dom P and Audubon are scheduled to perform. By now you know motto, “Spread love; it’s the Uptown way!”
I had the absolute honor to be in attendance for the kick-off gala for the 2012 Uptown Arts Stroll held at the sumptuous and ornate United Palace Theater (175th & Broadway) on Thursday, May 31st. Please check out my recap of the event with some truly beautiful pictures courtesy of Paul Lomax. This year’s Uptown Arts Stroll Kick off was so awesome that it deserves another look. Please take a gander at Art By Dj Boy’s pictures of the festivities.
In addition, we posted a truly wonderful story, via the NY Daily News, about how a pair of doctors at our very own New York-Presbyterian Hospital saved a 5-year-old girl who was at death’s door due to a rare, massive tumor that was found in her abdomen. This week’s crowd funding spotlight focused on the indiegogo campaign of Statement Arts. This summer Statement Arts is teaming up with the legendary Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Center to provide a free summer music and theater program for 50 underserved New York City kids!
Can you believe that it has been a year since Word Up Books opened up its doors? In that short period of time Word Up Books has become a focal point in this community. People come to buy books, to hang out, to talk, to conspire and to grow. I can no longer imagine this neighborhood without it. It has become that indispensable. We need it and it needs us. The Word Up Books Fund Drive kicked off last week with none other than the incredible Junot Diaz.
Our good friends at Le Chéile (839 West 181st Street) are now selling Nutcrackers as part of our Nutcracker Awareness Month Campaign. A portion of the proceeds will go to making our documentary on the Nutcracker. So please stop by and enjoy a Nutcracker and help us make this project a reality.
