They’re bringing the Blow.
The United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA) has crafted a holiday treat, made especially for uptown.
This Sunday, UPCA will present The Hip Hop Nutcracker, a unique contemporary take on the classic two-act ballet.
The show retains Tchaikovsky’s famous score and adheres to essential story elements that made the original a beloved holiday tale- and adds a couple of twists.
Instead of being en pointe with members of a traditional ballet troupe, the show features hip hop dancers, and the setting has been relocated to present-day Washington Heights on New Year’s Eve.
“The show has a real community feel, and combines different art forms to appeal to as many people as possible,” said Mike Fitelson, UPCA’s Executive Director, who also serves as the show’s co-creator.
Uptown-based SONOS Chamber Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s music.
And then there’s Blow.
And hip hop legend Kurtis Blow, who scored the first gold record in rap history with his record The Breaks, will serve as the evening’s guest MC.
Blow will perform a short set of his own material before rapping the show’s introduction.
“I’m always excited about any undertaking that expands the culture of hip hop,” said Blow.
“I feel blessed after 42 years to still be able to contribute.”
By injecting hip hop movement into a classical production, the show’s creators hope to make the tale interesting to a wider audience.
“We were faithful to the music and let it drive the storytelling,” explained the show’s co-creator, director and choreographer Jennifer Weber. “The juxtaposition of the hip hop dance and classical music allows you to see the beauty of both in fresh ways, finding new rhythms in the music to accentuate.”
“We’re trying to bring classical music and ballet out of their stereotypes, and maybe introduce them to some younger fans,” added Fitelson.
“At the same time, we’re trying to turn older audiences on to the vocabulary of hip hop.”
The seeds for the show were planted in 2013, after an unsuccessful attempt to bring a traditional production of The Nutcracker uptown.
After those plans fell through, Fitelson met Weber, the artistic director of the award-winning Decadancetheatre Company, which had blended classical music and hip hop dance in previous stage productions.
The two decided to create their own hip hop-infused version of the classic story.
“It made perfect sense,” said Fitelson. “It just clicked.”
After a test workshop in December 2013 proved a rousing success, the co-creators decided to press on with a full performance.
The show now features 12 hip hop dancers, a DJ and an electric violin player, and incorporates digitally projected scenery that includes iconic images of Washington Heights.
In order to display the images, two special projectors have been brought to the United Palace specifically for the performance.
Moreover, children from UPCA’s circus arts, hip hop dance, youth orchestra and West African drumming programs, as well as community members, will also perform during the show.
Ticket sales have been strong, say organizers. A crowd of about 2,500 is expected at the Palace for the performance.
“It’s going to be quite an atmosphere in the theater,” predicted Fitelson.
Prior to Sunday’s show at the Palace, The Hip Hop Nutcracker will have its official debut at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ on December 5 and 6.
Fitelson said that he has received inquiries about the show from different regions of the country, and said it is possible the show will go on the road in the future.
But wherever it may go, it seems the show will always have a home in the Heights.
“We’d especially love to make it an annual tradition [here],” said Fitelson. “It’s a unique show. People seem really to be intrigued.”

El United Palace de Artes Culturales (UPCA por sus siglas en inglés) ha creado un regalo de navidad, hecho especialmente para el norte del condado.
Este domingo, UPCA presentará The Hip Hop Nutcracker, una versión contemporánea única de la obra clásica de ballet de dos actos.
El espectáculo mantiene la célebre partitura de Tchaikovski y se adhiere a los elementos esenciales de la historia que se convirtió en un amado cuento navideño, además de añadir un par de giros.
En lugar de que los miembros tradicionales de la compañía de ballet estén en punta, el espectáculo cuenta con bailarines de hip hop, y el escenario ha sido trasladado al actual Washington Heights en la víspera de año nuevo.
“La obra tiene una sensación real de comunidad y combina diferentes formas de arte para atraer a tantas personas como sea posible”, dijo Mike Fitelson, director ejecutivo de UPCA, quien también es como co-creador del espectáculo.
La orquesta de cámara SONOS, con sede en Uptown, interpretará la música de Tchaikovski.
Y luego está Blow.

Las semillas para el espectáculo fueron plantadas en 2013, después de un intento infructuoso de traer al norte del condado una producción tradicional de The Nutcracker.
Después de que esos planes fracasaran, Fitelson se reunió con Weber, la directora artística de la galardonada compañía Decadancetheatre, quienes habían mezclado música clásica y baile hip hop en producciones teatrales previas.
Ambos decidieron crear su propia versión llena de hip hop de la historia clásica del Nutcracker.
“Tenía sentido”, dijo Fitelson. “Sólo hizo clic”.
Después de que un taller de prueba de diciembre de 2013 resultara ser todo un éxito, los co-creadores decidieron seguir adelante con un espectáculo completo.
