Skelos: Guilty on all counts

Former State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his son Adam were convicted on all eight counts of bribery, extortion and corruption in a Manhattan federal court on December 11.

The elder Skelos was accused of using his position of power to set up no-show jobs for his son, and extorting about $300,000 in salary and benefits for Adam.

A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for only one day before returning a verdict.

The high-profile trial featured wiretap recordings of phone conversations between the Skeloses.

Prosecutors said the tapes were proof the pair schemed behind the scenes to pressure three companies into agreeing to employ the 33-year-old Adam.

The defense unsuccessfully argued that Skelos, 67, was merely a loving father taking care of his only child, not a politician on the take.

Skelos defense attorney Robert Gage said he would “vigorously” pursue post-trial motions.

The Skelos verdict came about two weeks after former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was found guilty on seven counts of corruption in his own federal trial.

The convictions marked the stunning downfall of two-thirds of the so-called “three men in a room” ― Silver, Skelos and Governor Andrew Cuomo ― who controlled all legislation in Albany.

“There can be no tolerance for those who use, and seek to use, public service for private gain,” said Cuomo in a statement. “The convictions of former Speaker Silver and former Majority Leader Skelos should be a wakeup call for the Legislature and it must stop standing in the way of needed reforms.”
