The world knows they can run, kick and score – but will they float?
Fresh off their 5-2 win versus Japan, members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team – now the Women’s World Cup champions – will soon join the elite ranks of those honored in the city’s Canyon of Heroes.
The city has announced that it will hold a ticker-tape parade to celebrate the team’s World Cup victory this Fri., Jul. 10th beginning at 11 a.m. along Broadway, from the Battery to City Hall.
This will be the first time in more than half a century that female athletes will be honored at the Canyon of Heroes.
Clamors for a parade had begun earlier this week on Mon., Jul. 6th when Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer issued a letter urging Mayor Bill de Blasio to host the ticker-tape parade.
“New York has a strong history of honoring sports teams in the Canyon of Heroes, but has never held a parade to honor a women’s team,” said Brewer in her letter. “Our newest soccer champions present an opportunity for New York to recognize that heroes and role models come in all genders, and I hope you will work with me to make this parade a reality.”
The Borough President created a petition on Change.org to drum up public support for the parade, and she also wrote Sunil Gulati, President of United States Soccer Federation.
From the beginning, the administration seemed amenable to the proposal; the Mayor’s office said on Tuesday that it was “exploring logistics and talking with the team and other partners.”
The talking is done – now it’s time for the ticker tape.
The Canyon of Heroes, a stretch of Broadway that runs from Battery Park to City Hall, has long served as the site of citywide celebration. It was first used in 1886 during the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, and parades held there have heralded the historic travels of Amelia Earheart and Apollo mission astronauts, as well as the feats of the 2009 World Series champions, the New York Yankees.
Most recently, a parade was held in 2012 to mark the New York Giants’ win of Super Bowl XLVI.
And now it’s the women’s turn.
“I can think of no better way to honor these amazing athletes,” said Brewer.

La ciudad ha anunciado que llevará a cabo un desfile triunfal para celebrar la victoria del equipo este viernes, 10 de julio a partir de las 11 de la mañana a lo largo de Broadway, desde el ‘Battery’ al Ayuntamiento.
Esta será la primera vez en más de medio siglo que las mujeres atletas serán honradas en el Cañón de los Héroes.
Gale Brewer, presidenta del condado de Manhattan, emitió una carta el lunes 6 de julio instando al alcalde Bill de Blasio a considerar organizar un desfile triunfal para el equipo.
