StudentFest and Family Expo 2015
The CUNA Parent Working Group invites residents to the New York City StudentFest and Family Expo on Sun., Feb. 8th, From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The 2015 Student Fest and Family Expo presents an informative event with resources, products, services and information for New York tri- state area parents and students. It seeks to assist parents in helping their children to better succeed in education and in life.
There will be gift bags, face painting and clowns, in addition to information on technology, education, scholarship information, health, credit counseling, banking, and more will be featured. The StudentFest and Family Expo is sponsored by Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez and will take place at P.S. 48, located at 4360 Broadway.

Black Butterfly
Black Butterfly, a work based on the legacy and physical gestures of Muhammad Ali, will be performed on Sun., Feb 15th at 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church located at16-20 Mount Morris Park West. Featuring trumpets, saxophones, keyboards, bass, drums, and trombones, Black Butterfly celebrates the essence and spirit of Ali with contemporary live music. The musical composition transposes Ali’s physical language into a notated score. Rhythms shadow his footwork, melodies “sing the song” of his jab, and harmonies display the power of his combinations.

The Harlem Chamber Players
The Harlem Chamber Players will present its Seventh Annual Black History Month Celebration Concert on Sun., Feb. 22nd at 3:00 p.m. The concert takes place at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church at 521 West 126th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue). Author, Journalist and Historian Eric K. Washington will host the celebration. The concert features Metropolitan Opera Soprano Janinah Burnett; Pianist James Davis Jr.; Violinist Patmore Lewis; Violinist Belinda Whitney; Violist Tia Allen; Cellist Lawrence Zoernig; and Clarinetist and Artistic Director Liz Player.
The concert will also feature the world première of composer James Lee III’s String Quartet No. 2 as well as selections from soprano Janinah Burnett’s I Too Sing America: An Artistic Tribute to Victims of Police Brutality. The concert will also present George Walker’s Lyric for Strings and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Quintet for Clarinet and String.

The Art of Crafting Short Stories
Bronx Writers Center Director Charlie Vázquez will lead a three-part workshop series on the art of crafting short stories—from basic structural elements to advanced editing techniques. Participants will craft and develop a short fiction piece that will be ready to submit to literary contests, magazines and for reading in public.
Short stories will be read, discussed and written. The workshop phases are:
- Part 1 – The Basics: Structure, Elements and Lists
Fri., Feb. 13th, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - Part 2 – Settings that Sizzle, Characters that Compel
Fri., Feb. 20th, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - Part 3 – Wrapping Up! – Advanced Editing Techniques

Charlie Vázquez is the author of two novels, Buzz and Israel and Contraband, and the director of the Bronx Writers Center at the Bronx Council on the Arts. He’s published various short stories and poems in literary magazines and online journals and is the New York City coordinator for Puerto Rico’s Festival de la Palabra, an international literary celebration. He’s served as editor for three anthologies of fiction, memoir and poetry, and is currently finishing his third novel, a paranormal detective mystery set in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. All of the workshops will be hosted at the Inwood Center located at 5030 Broadway.

StudentFest y Expo Familia 2015
El grupo de trabajo de padres CUNA invita a los residentes de la ciudad de Nueva York al StudentFest y Expo Familia el domingo 8 de febrero, de 10:00 am a 3:00 pm. Es un evento informativo con recursos, productos, servicios e información para padres y estudiantes de la zona triestatal de Nueva York. Su objetivo es apoyar a los padres para que ayuden a sus hijos a tener el mayor éxito en la educación y en la vida.
Habrá bolsas de regalo, pintura de caras y payasos, además de información sobre tecnología, educación, becas, salud, asesoría de crédito, banca y más. El StudentFest y Expo Familia es patrocinado por el concejal Ydanis Rodríguez y tendrá lugar en la escuela pública 48, ubicada en el 4360 de Broadway.

Habrá trompetas, saxofones, teclados, bajo, batería y trombones, Black Butterfly celebra la esencia y el espíritu de Ali con la música viva contemporánea. La composición musical transpone el lenguaje físico de Ali con una partitura. Los ritmos hacen sombra de su juego de piernas, las melodías “cantan la canción” de su golpe y las armonías muestran el poder de sus combinaciones.

Músicos de Harlem Chamber presentarán su Séptimo Concierto Anual de Celebración del Mes de la Historia Negra el domingo 22 de febrero a las 3:00 pm. El concierto tendrá lugar en la iglesia episcopal St. Mary en el 521 de la calle 126 oeste (entre Broadway y la avenida Ámsterdam). El autor, periodista e historiador Eric K. El arte de crear cuentos cortos
El director del Centro de Escritores del Bronx, Charlie Vázquez, encabezará una serie de talleres de tres partes sobre el arte de la creación de cuentos cortos, desde elementos estructurales básicos hasta técnicas avanzadas de edición. Los participantes diseñarán y desarrollarán una pieza corta de ficción que estará lista para presentar a concursos literarios, revistas y para leer en público.
Los cuentos cortos serán leídos, discutidos y escritos. Las fases del taller son:
