Memorial Day was marked in Inwood this past Mon., May 27th with a 10:00 a.m. Mass at Good Shepherd Church on Isham Street and Broadway. After the service, the American Legion Inwood Post #581 and New York City Transit’s Pipes and Drums, together with Good Shepherd’s clergy, veterans and community members, gathered for wreath-laying ceremonies in the September 11th Memorial Garden.
The annual parade celebrated along Broadway was not held this year, due to the sequester and the subsequent cancellation of Fleet Week.
As was noted by a number of Manhattan Times readers, the procession was missed.
“Uusally we see gatherings of sailors and Marines, Little League kids, scouts, vets, etc., but there was no one [this year],” wrote one concerned resident. “There were a bunch of folks waiting on the corner of Broadway and Dyckman waiting for the parade to start at noon and nothing happened.”
Here’s hoping for next year.
