UC Recap – June 18 – June 23

June 18 – June 23

On Thursday, June 14th the Uptown Collective held its 2-Year Anniversary shindig at the swank and sexy Negro Claro Lounge (3805 10th Ave). And what a shindig it was. We had awesome performances from local artists such as Audubon, Oveous Maximus and Beny White as well as live art from the incomparable Marthalicia Matarrita and Alexander Reynoso. Check out my recap of the event including pictures by the one and only Emil Baez.

Like I have said on many occasions, outside of the Presidential election, the race for the 13th Congressional district is shaping up to be one of the most interesting in all of the nation. Earlier in the race global Fashion icon, Oscar De La Renta endorsed Adriano Espaillat for Congress and now Pulitzer-Prize winning author Junot Díaz has done the same. The election will be decided on Tuesday, June 26th.

That’s right people; the 6th annual Make Music New York Festival went down on Thursday, June 21st all over this great metropolis. With 1,000 free outdoor concerts on a single day in all parts of New York City and 8 venues in the Washington Heights and Inwood area, the event was inescapable. Our good friends at Word Up Books (4157 Broadway) had a rousing line up for music lovers including Dom P, DJ Boy and Geo Safari among many others.

This week saw another installment of the popular 7 Questions with Dominican Pie. The subject was the incredible artist Natalie del Villar. The Inwood Shakespeare Festvial kicks off on Wednesday, June 27th. Grab your blankets and we will see you there. Ok folks, we have less than 60 days left in our Nutcracker Inc campaign and we could sure use your help in making this film a reality. By the way, shout out Sacario, for his awesome Uptown PSA. And don’t forget, Saturday, June 30th will be Nutcracker Awareness Day at Le Chéile (839 West 181st Street), which will be a veritable Nutcracker Festival from 4 to 7 pm.

The Uptown Tweet of the Week goes to neighborhood hero Lin-Manuel Miranda for his hilarious clip on the recent heat wave entitled appropriately enough, Hot As Balls 2. Check it out; I dare you not to laugh out loud.
