Mexodus is a hip-hop musical about the Underground Railroad – not the one that led north but that instead crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico. Tagged “an electrifying theatrical experience” (The New York Times), the musical, co-created and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, opened on March 6 at the Daryl Roth Theatre.
Due to popular demand, the show is being extended until June 14.
As outlined in press materials, the story focuses on a “freedom seeker and an unlikely ally as they forge a remarkable bond that transcends borders.”
The show takes place in 1851, as Henry (Robinson), born in Kentucky and sold in Texas, flees south across the Rio Grande. He posts up, injured and hunted, at Carlos’ (Quijada) farm. Though he considers turning Henry in and bagging the reward, Carlos ultimately aids Henry and the two strike up a unique connection.
The production earned three Helen Hayes Awards: Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical for Brian Quijada and Outstanding Director of a Musical for David Mendizábal.
Mexodus was developed in previous productions at New York Stage and Film (2021), Baltimore Center Stage & Mosaic Theater Company of DC (Spring 2024), and Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Fall 2024).
The show is choreographed by Tony Thomas and directed by David Mendizábal and is produced by P3 Productions, which is led by Ben Holtzman, Sammy López, and Fiona Howe Rudin.
Mexodus features understudies Alan Méndez and Trent Lawson. The creative team for Mexodus includes Riw Rakkulchon (Scenic Design), David Mendizábal (Costume Design), Mextly Couzin (Lighting Design), Mikhail Fiksel (Looping Systems Architecture and Sound Design), and Johnny Moreno (Video/Projections Design). Hope Villanueva is the Production Stage Manager.
Mexodus will also be released as an Audible Original on April 16, which features the entire musical recorded in Dolby Atmos. The pre-order is now available.

Mexodus es un musical de hip-hop sobre el Ferrocarril Subterráneo, no el que se dirigía hacia el norte, sino el que cruzaba el Río Grande hacia México. Calificado como “una experiencia teatral electrizante” (por The New York Times), el musical, coescrito e interpretado por Brian Quijada y Nygel D. Robinson, se estrenó el 6 de marzo en el Teatro Daryl Roth.
Debido a la gran demanda, la temporada se ha prolongado hasta el 14 de junio.
Tal y como se describe en los materiales de prensa, la historia se centra en “un buscador de la libertad y un aliado inesperado que forjan un vínculo extraordinario que trasciende las fronteras”.
La historia se desarrolla en 1851, cuando Henry (Robinson) —nacido en Kentucky y vendido en Texas— huye hacia el sur, cruzando el río Grande. Herido y perseguido, se refugia en la granja de Carlos (Quijada). Aunque este considera entregar a Henry para cobrar la recompensa, finalmente decide ayudarlo, y entre ambos surge un vínculo único.
