The junior varsity basketball team from Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) won the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) championship last month. The WHEELS team, known as the Wolves, won the title by defeating No. 1 seed Curtis High School by a score of 63-52 in the championship game, played at the Achievement First Gym in Brooklyn on March 22. It marked the first time a team from Washington Heights has won the PSAL title. “It’s an exciting thing for our school and for Washington Heights,” said coach Earl Bell. “We’re proud to be the first.” Comprised of ninth and tenth graders, the team enjoyed a successful season overall, compiling a 17-3 record and scoring over 100 points in numerous games. “We full-court press a lot, and try to play an exciting, aggressive style,” Bell said. Players on the team include Myles Vicioso, Jordany Martínez, Dyrell González, Erick Peña, Jeremiah Davis, Jarlin Bello, Jalen Sabino, Justin Rosso, Joel Ramírez, Randy Crosby and Demitrius Doward. Coach Shyam Kannan said the tournament success provided good experience for the junior varsity (JV) players. “For the JV kids that are moving up to varsity next year, it’s good for them to have that experience of winning together,” Kannan said. “It was a little nerve-wracking in the end,” said Bell. Kannan said that WHEELS, a Pre-K through 12th grade school with a focus on college readiness, stresses the importance of academics to its athletes. Since 2012, 78 percent of WHEELS graduates have enrolled in college, a rate 22 percent higher than the city average. “The players are focused on school first and foremost,” he said. “The teachers are always supportive.” He said the success of the basketball team would boost the school’s profile with a larger set of prospects across the city. “It could attract good basketball players,” said Kannam. “It will hopefully get some attention for us and make even more people want to come here,” he added.
