Verdant Venues
The venues become part of the narrative.There is a new festival among the flowers.
In collaboration with New York Restoration Project (NYRP), the Motor Company will host “Communal Spaces: A Garden Play Festival,” a series of short plays in local gardens throughout East Harlem.
The pieces are presented one after the other in the same afternoon so that audience members are able to attend consecutive plays in the same neighborhood as they move from one garden to another.
Organizers, including Artistic Director Lillian Meredith and Producing Director Jessica Schmidt, explain that the idea is to spend a “late summer afternoon wandering the neighborhood and watching original, site-responsive, outdoor theater.”
A playwright is assigned to each garden and the venues themselves become part of the plays, which run for about 20-30 minutes.
This year, “Communal Spaces” will take place in four community gardens with four new plays written by Nora Sørena Casey, Catherine Weingarten, Matt Barbot, and David M. deLeón with direction by Gineiris García, Kate Hopkins, Dalia Sevilla, and Lillian Meredith, respectively.
“By making theater that directly relates to and augments these spaces and encourages exploration of not only the gardens but the neighborhood beyond, we invite our audiences to consider their relationship to the city we all call home,” write the producers. “Love your city. Love your gardens. Plant urban roots.”
The festival is now in its eighth year, and is part of the Motor Company’s ongoing mission to produce accessible and community-oriented theater, and to use public spaces for storytelling and theatrical events. Additional annual programs include short plays written for and performed in laundromats and city bars.
The “Communal Spaces” plays are set to run Saturdays and Sundays in September from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

I like it like that! The present meets the 60’s in this story of love, community and music. Papito tells young Marilu about the heyday of Boogalú, when the neighborhood had to stand together or risk being torn apart.

La nueva serie está ambientada en East Harlem.Hay un nuevo festival entre las flores.
En colaboración con el Proyecto de Restauración de Nueva York (NYRP, por sus siglas en inglés), Motor Company presentará “Commnual Spaces: un festival de obras de jardín”, una serie de obras cortas en jardines locales en East Harlem.
Las piezas son presentadas una tras otra en la misma tarde para que el público pueda asistir a obras consecutivas en el mismo vecindario mientras van de un jardín a otro.
Los organizadores, incluida la directora artística Lillian Meredith y la directora de producción Jessica Schmidt, explican que la idea es pasar una tarde de finales de verano vagando por el vecindario y viendo un teatro original al aire libre que responde al sitio.
Se asigna un dramaturgo a cada jardín y los lugares mismos se convierten en parte de las obras de teatro, que duran de 20 a 30 minutos.

El festival se encuentra ahora en su octavo año y es parte de la misión permanente de Motor Company de producir un teatro accesible y orientado a la comunidad, y utilizar espacios públicos para contar historias y eventos teatrales. Los programas anuales adicionales incluyen obras escritas y representadas en lavanderías y bares de la ciudad.
