A Reel Decade

A celebration of ten years of uptown cinema

Ten years in, and Aaron Simms is as incredulous as ever.

A decade of film and filmmaking uptown is being celebrated when the Inwood Film Festival kicks off this year on May 29th with three days of more than 37 films, catered food, live music, panel discussions with film makers, seminars and more.

“Can you believe it?” asked Simms. “Ten years of really crazy talented people submitting their films.”

Simms is the founder of the Inwood Film Festival and Inwood Art Works, which produces local art shows, free summer movie screenings, musical events, a weekly podcast as well as the film festival.

Is it Anything? is directed by Jonathan Ullman.

This year’s festival, held at the Campbell Sports Center just off Baker Field on West 218th Street, begins May 29th with a gala event and runs through June 1.

The festival offers three feature films, several long and short films, including animations like My Hair, a musical about a young girl, and But I’m a Shoe, a short about airline travel.

Among the festival’s many standout entries are documentaries. Our Island, directed by Ronny A. Sosa, is about ecological challenges in the Dominican Republic. Simms called the 87-minute film “incredible.” “It takes you through different parts of the Dominical Republic. They talk to local leaders and scientists and people who are out there, talking about the harm of plastics and the environment,” he said. “It’s about environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.”

The Hessians and the Pastelito was written by James Bosley.

Another documentary, The Good Mind directed by Gwendolyn Cates, is a feature-length film about the Onondaga Nation in New York State and the tribe’s environmental advocacy and legal battles over treaty violations involving their ancestral lands.

Minted, directed by Nicholas Bruckman, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. It examines the art world’s rapid rise of NFTs (non-fungible tokens), including interviews with Beeple, the artist who started the craze.

The “Women in the World” series features five short films and is preceded by a networking mixer.

There are several films by local artists, including The Hessians and the Pastelito, written by James Bosley and directed by Kevin Scott and stars Matt Higgins. “It’s about two Hessian mercenaries, from the Revolutionary War. They wake up in 2004 behind the Dyckman farmhouse in Inwood and discover how things have changed,” said Simms. “They think the Dominicans won the Revolutionary War.”

“It’s a labor of love,” said founder Aaron Simms of the film festival.

Another film that features the neighborhood is the animated long short by Jay Marks, A Walk in the Park. As a man walks his dog in Inwood Hill Park, he finds that the neighborhood starts to attack him. “The animation is fantastic,” said Simms.

The Good Life is a feature-length film about the Onondaga Nation in New York State.

On Sunday, the festival features several films by and about women. The “Women in the World” series features five short films and is preceded by a Women in Film Networking Mixer—with free mimosas.

Tickets can be on the Inwood Art Works website. Festival prices have stayed the same for the past 10 years.

Sweet Boys, a film by Natasha Rivera, is described as “a love letter to youth, East Harlem and the kids I knew growing up.”

Simms maintains those prices with grants and several local sponsorships. “That’s something that we need. Ticket sales only make up a fraction of the cost of the festival. We’re a not-for-profit, and we do a lot of things besides the film festival,” he said. “But the fact that matter is, it’s a labor of love, and I do my best to raise the money for Inwood Art Works. It wouldn’t exist on its own.”

The Hessians and the Pastelito fue escrita por James Bosley.

Is it Anything? es dirigida por Jonathan Ullman.
