UC Recap – September 5 – September 10

September 5 – September 10
The DR Travelogue is a book/project that has been gestating in my mind for the last 5 years. It is my heart-felt ode to Quisqueya La Bella, a place that remains in the hearts and minds of many of the Dominicans living abroad. The DR Travelogue is a native son’s poignant and hilarious journey to the heart, soul and soil of the Dominican Republic. Check out the site for a host of pictures of my recent trip to the DR using the popular photo-sharing app, Instagram.
Health and wellness super site Care2 recently profiled our very own Eileen Z. Fuentes. Not only is Eileen the Uptown Collective’s wellness contributor, she is also, more importantly, my wife and the mother of my 3 daughters. I have seen this woman go from a heartbreaking triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 34 to the subsequent surgeries and chemotherapy treatment, to deciding that cancer would not defeat her. Eileen made it her life’s mission to help other women with their cancer journeys by starting the very first Women’s Wellness Series right here at the Columbia University Medical Center.
Speaking of Mrs. Fuentes, we also posted the latest installment of the Elixir wellness series on the importance of home cooked meals. In addition, we ran another awesome Uptown Portrait by journalist Amaris Castillo.
What is Sweetest Taboo? They are greeting cards for those that “live and love boldly”, for those that are in a gay relationship, a lesbian relationship, in a bi-racial relationship or any other kind of relationship that some in society may not deem appropriate. This is about celebrating love in all of its manifestations. If that is something you want to support, this project is only a few hundred dollars short of making its KickStarter goal of $5,000. There are only a few days left. You can get behind this endeavor here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sweetesttaboocards/the-cards-hallmark-forgot-about
As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com.

The Uptown Collective
The UC’s mission is to become “the” definitive, transformative and community-based force impacting the arts, culture, business and New York City’s overall perception of Upper Manhattan. Its objective is to reset, reboot and positively redefine Uptown’s artistic, political, cultural and business spheres via the online space as well the collective’s initiatives and functions.
