UC Recap – July 2 – July 7

July 2 – July 7
This week, the news that beloved local artist and entrepreneur, Will TeeZ, was battling Leukemia rocked many in the Uptown community. To say that Will TeeZ is a fixture in the Inwood community, is a massive understatement. Will TeeZ has been an integral part of the Uptown creative community for years now. To meet Will is to like Will. The entire Uptown community is rooting for Will and his family. You can donate and help Will out by going to the following site: http://indiegogo.com/willteez.
The world famous Batoto Yetu (Swahili for “Our Children”) dance company will host free dance classes and performances at the venerable Morris Jumel Mansion. The classes will take place on July14th and 21st from 10 am – 2 pm. While we are the topic of dance, Washington Heights’ own Xianix Barrera is a professional Flamenco dancer and she recently started her own Flamenco Company, Sabor Flamenco. Check out our site for an amazing video by Fred Focus that was shot Uptown that shows Xianix and some of her dancers doing their thing.
Who says Friday the 13th is an unlucky day? Hogwash, our people over at the Bago Bunch and Priviliged MG are putting together a shindig at Arka Lounge (4488 Broadway) on Friday, July 13th that you don’t want to miss. See you there.
Everyone has their own way of celebrating Independence Day and Washington Heights is no exception. Check out my recap of the night with some amazing pics courtesy of Art By Dj Boy.
In addition to Saturday, June 30th being Nutcracker Awareness Day, it was also the closing reception for the best Uptown Arts Stroll ever. For the closing reception, NoMAA teamed up with Remezcla, the Bago Bunch and the UC to put together an evening that was emblematic of the growing strength, diversity and confidence of the Uptown Arts scene. We came together as a community to celebrate that richness as well as to continue to build, expand and grow. You could feel the love in the room. There is an arts, culture and business awakening happening Uptown and it feels super awesome to be a part of it. Like I have said on many occasions, the Uptown Renaissance is in full effect!
