August 13 – August 18
Sunday, August 12th was the Dominican Day Parade, so you know the Uptown Collective crew was on hand to capture the magic of the occasion. Check out our pictures of the festivities courtesy of Art By Dj Boy. By the way, much love goes out to the Thats Dominican crew for letting us rock out on their float. Those guys alongside neighborhood funnyman, Pancho Manguera, whipped the gathered crowds into sheer frenzy.
While we are on the topic of the Dominican Day Parade, we also posted my recap of the 2012 Dominican Day Parade. From having a lovely breakfast at La Marina, to getting stuck in the elevator on 181st Street, to getting on the Thats Dominican float, to having Dj Boy almost getting arrested at the end of the night for merely documenting cops manhandling someone. This particular Sunday was simply unforgettable. Read about the entire experience on the site.
This was a very big week for the dynamic duo of Juan Bago & O. Not only did they debut their new song and video, Quisqueya featuring Minus P, Oveous Maximus and Elmo Difoca on Monday, August 13th. The very next day, they hosted a video release party at Dyckman Bar (221 Dyckman) for another 2 videos that made their debut on Wednesday.
The NY Knicks fan blog, Buckets Over Broadway, ran a great story on NY Knicks point guard J.R. Smith who has become a crowd favorite at the Dyckman Tournament. Speaking of the Dyckman Tournament, the playoffs began last week, so if you intend on going you better get there early.
Inspired by the world renowned El Sistema music program of Venezuela and led by Abreu Fellow’ 11 David Gracia, the WHIN Music Project will offer a 2-week intensive choral and orchestral program for children and youth in the community that will end with a final public performance. This summer program is the first step in establishing an El Sistema program in Northern Manhattan. Global music icon, Alicia Keys will be at the 92Y to talk with Jonathan Tisch on Monday, September 10th. The best part is that Uptown Collective readers get a 50% discount on select tickets by using our special UPTOWN promo code.
