May 13 – May 18
It’s on people. The Northern Manhattan Restaurant Week has begun and that means a bunch of great deals at some of your favorite restaurants. The promotion also gives you a reason to try some of the spots you haven’t patronized yet. So from an Uptown institution like Coogan’s, to the lighter fare of Pick And Eat, to the flair and fusion of Mamajuana, there is a host of great deals to get you to keep those Uptown dollars Uptown. But hurry, Northern Manhattan Restaurant Week ends on Sunday, May 26th.
The always-incredible Carnaval Del Boulevard goes down on Saturday, June 1st from 11am to 6 pm on St. Nicholas Avenue from 181st to 188th Streets. This event is fun for the entire family and this year, artists from the WHIN By Any Means movement will be doing their thing on stage. Make sure your there for one of the most important events of an Uptown summer.
The WHIN By Any Means movement touched down recently at Altus Café (4325 Broadway & 184th street) for a little Herstory unplugged love courtesy of a bevy of talented ladies that included Cynthia La Cruz, Camille Safiya, Arinn Aldo, Karen Rodriguez and Tess. Backed by the dynamic duo of Will Glass and Alexis Marcelo, on the drums and keyboard respectively, the females proved beyond the shadow of a doubt whose world this is. By the way, WHIN IV goes down at our home base of Negro Claro (3805 10th Ave) on Thursday, May 23rd.
Our Monday Mood Music column featured a new song by Perrion, Get A Job. This week also saw the release of the highly anticipated Memoirs of the Meek & Famous Mixtape by Eckz. We also featured an excellent piece of verse by the mysteriously named The Native entitled City, I Am. Did you know that one of Classical Music’s best-kept secrets is right here in Washington Heights? This week the Wall Street Journal reported on the venerable American Academy of Arts and Letters that is on 156th Street.
The Best of the Boogie Down column by Jenni Ruiza focused on the artistry of Ohene Cornelius. UC contributor, Arlene Schulman, introduced us to 27-year-old Ivan Perez, who is a guidance counselor by day and a drag queen by night.
