The Power of One

The public parks of northern Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood are a stunning source of natural beauty and inspire great affection among uptown residents.

There is also considerable passion within the volunteers who help maintain those parks.

In 2011, filmmaker Neil Orman set out to document the volunteer dynamic in Isham Park. His work resulted in the short documentary film, The Power of One.

The recently-completed film depicts the story of María Lall, a longtime Isham Park volunteer who helped create a garden near the park’s Broadway entrance, but eventually experienced friction with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

Orman, an Inwood resident when most of the film was created, had intended to weave a general tale of the park’s volunteer corps, but ended up focusing on Lall, a fiery personality who boldly engaged in projects largely of her own design.

The subplot of Lall’s actions and how she ran afoul of the Parks Department became the crux of the documentary.

“Basically, I kept following María and everything unfolded in front of my camera,” said Orman.

Lall, a native of Spain who has lived next to Isham Park for 37 years, is a familiar face to many locals, who have often witnessed her puttering in the park, ripping weeds and removing garbage, all while wearing her trademark hat featuring the slogan “The Power of One.”

For her, the slogan is a personal mantra of sorts, and describes the power that a single person has to accomplish great things in life.

“One person can create or destroy things; every individual has the choice to do good or bad actions,” she said.

During her eight years as a volunteer, Lall became particularly dismayed by the condition of one stretch of the park, nicknamed Isham Alley, near where the pedestrian path meets Broadway.

“That area of the park was disgusting,” said Lall. “It was filled with human excrement, trash and drug syringes.”

Orman agreed, “It’s clear that section wasn’t maintained quite as well as other areas of the park.”

Lall spearheaded a volunteer effort to clean up this neglected space. Using her own plants, she fashioned a large flower garden, which soon flourished with an array of colorful perennials.

“It made people in the neighborhood happy,” remarked Lall. “Seeing the garden put a smile on their face.”

Orman’s film reveals that as Lall performed an increasing amount of work, she came to see the garden, and that entire section of the park, as her own. This mindset seemed to make Parks Department officials uncomfortable, said Orman.

He explained, “In some cases, I feel like it was just the way she expressed herself – with great passion, but actually claiming a degree of ownership over that area.”

Lall regularly recruited Mormon missionaries, up to a dozen at a time, to assist her with maintaining the garden.

Tensions with park officials increased during the summer of 2011, when Lall erected a wall of rocks along the edge of Isham Park that borders her apartment building. She said the structure was made to prevent erosion and stymie flooding that often occurred near her building when it rained.

Lall had the missionaries assist her in lugging rocks from 215th Street to create the barrier.

Shortly after that, the Parks Department asked Lall to refrain from conducting any work in the park without supervision.

It was also suggested to Lall that she work alongside the park’s official gardener each week, rather than on her own.

“María couldn’t understand why they were increasing their supervision over her, when she felt that she had been allowed to work fairly unsupervised in there for a long time,” said Orman.

Parks Department personnel removed the rock wall that Lall constructed and revamped her garden, removing many of her original plantings in the process.

Lall said that she had permission from the Parks Department to complete the tasks she did.

“I keep the rules of the park; before I planted anything or moved anything, I asked,” she stated.

While Orman’s project shows the dedication of park volunteers, it also indicates that tensions can sometimes arise, due to the emotions involved.

“These are passionate, committed volunteers who work for years,” commented Orman. “For some of them, it’s much more than just a casual hobby.”

Orman filmed the final scenes for his documentary this past summer, to depict what the park looks like now.

He is shopping his movie to various film showcases, and recently landed a spot at the Big Apple Film Festival, where The Power of One will be screened this November.

“I feel that this film is a very New York story, and that María is a fascinating character study,” remarked Orman.

“I think she’s a person a lot of New Yorkers can relate to, in that she’s an interesting multicultural personality who is very passionate and outspoken.”

Lall no longer performs any gardening or cleanup in Isham Alley — currently, she works with volunteers in the Bruce’s Garden section of Isham Park.

Shel expressed disappointment that the garden she worked hard to create no longer exists in the form that she intended.

“It’s sad for me to see it like this, but they do still have some of my original flowers there,” she remarked.

Although there were changes to Lall’s handiwork, she takes pride in the fact that Isham Park is a more attractive place than it was a few years ago.

“What I did was not in vain,” she commented. “That area of the park is in much better shape now than before I started.”

Taking care of the earth is what Lall had hoped her legacy would be.

“If you’re good to Mother Nature,” she said, “she’ll be good to you.”

La recién completada película presenta la historia de Maria Lall, una voluntaria de mucho tiempo del Parque Isham quien ayudó a crear un jardín cerca de la entrada del parque en Broadway, pero eventualmente experimentó fricción con el Departamento de Parques y Recreo de la ciudad de Nueva York.

Orman, residente de Inwood durante la mayoría del tiempo cuando la película fue creada, tenía la intención de tejer una historia general del cuerpo de voluntarios del parque, pero terminó enfocándose en Lall, una fogosa personalidad que se dedica mayormente a proyectos suyos.

Para ella, el lema es un mantra personal de algún tipo, y describe el poder de que una sola persona tiene que lograr grandes cosas en la vida.

“Una persona puede crear o destruir cosas; cada individuo tiene la opción de hacer acciones buenas o malas”, dijo ella.

Durante sus ochos años como voluntaria, Lall estuvo particularmente preocupada por la condición de una parte del parque, apodada ‘Isham Alley’, cerca donde el camino de peatones se encuentra con Broadway.

“Esa área del parque era desagradable”, dijo Lall. “Estaba llena de excremento humano, basura y jeringas de drogas”.

Orman estuvo de acuerdo, “es claro que esa sección no era mantenida bien como otras áreas del parque”. Lall encabezó un esfuerzo voluntario para limpiar este descuidado espacio. Utilizando sus propias plantas, hizo un gran jardín, el cual pronto floreció con una variedad de coloridas flores.

“Hizo a la gente del vecindario feliz”, comentó Lall. “Ver el jardín ponía una sonrisa en sus caras”.

La película de Orman revela como Lall ha realizado una cantidad cada vez mayor de trabajo, venia a ver el jardín, y la sección entera del parque, como suya propia. Esta mentalidad parecía incomodar a los oficiales del Departamento, dijo Orman.

El explicó, “en algunos casos, sentía que era solo la manera en que ella misma se expresaba – con gran pasión, pero en realidad reclamando un título de propiedad sobre esa área”.

Lall regularmente reclutaba a misioneros mormones, hasta una docena a la vez, para ayudarla a mantener el jardín.

Las tensiones con los oficiales del parque aumentaron durante el verano del 2011, cuando Lall hizo una pared de rocas a lo largo del borde el Parque Isham que bordeaba su edificio de apartamentos. Ella dijo que la estructura fue hecha para prevenir la erosión y las inundaciones que a menudo ocurrían cerca de su edificio cuando llovía.

Lall utilizó a los misioneros a asistirla cargando rocas de la Calle 215 para crear la barrera.

Un poco después, el Departamento de Parques le pidió a Lall de abstenerse de hacer cualquier trabajo en el parque sin supervisión.

También le fue sugerido a Lall que trabajara junto a los oficiales de jardinería del parque cada semana, en lugar de por cuenta propia.

“María no podía entender porque estaban aumentando la estaban supervisando cuando ella sentía que le habían permitido trabajar casi sin supervisión ahí por mucho tiempo”, dijo Orman.

El personal del Departamento de Parques removió la pared de rocas que Lall había construido y repavimentó el jardín, removiendo muchas de las plantas originales en el proceso.

Lall dijo que ella tenía permiso del Departamento de Parques para completar la tarea que había hecho. “Yo sigo las reglas del parque; antes de sembrar algo o mover cualquier cosa, yo pregunté”, señaló. Mientras que el proyecto de Orman muestra la dedicación de los voluntarios del parque, también indica que las tensiones algunas veces pueden surgir, debido a las emociones envueltas.

“Estos son apasionado, comprometidos voluntarios que trabajan por años”, comentó Orman. “Para muchos de ellos, es mucho más que un pasatiempo casual”.

Orman filmó las escenas finales para su documental el verano pasado, para representar como luce ahora el parque.

Está llevando su película a varios festivales de películas, y recientemente consiguió un lugar en el Festival de Cine ‘Big Apple’, donde The Power of One será presentada este noviembre.

“Siento que esta película es una historia muy de Nueva York, y que María es un fascinante estudio de personaje”, señaló Orman.

“Pienso que es una persona a la que muchos neoyorquinos se pueden relacionar, en eso ella es una interesante personalidad multicultural quien es bien apasionada y franca”

Lall ya no realiza ninguna jardinería ni limpieza en Isham Alley. Actualmente, trabaja con voluntarios en la sección del Jardín Bruce del Parque Isham.

Ella expresó decepción de que el jardín en el cual trabajó tan duro para crearlo ya no existe en la forma en la que ella se proponía.

“Para mi es triste verlo así, pero todavía tiene algunas de mis flores originales”, señaló.

Aunque hubo cambios al trabajo de Lall, ella se enorgullece en el hecho de que el Parque Isham es un lugar más atractivo de cómo lo era años atrás.

“Lo que hice no fue en vano”, comentó. “Esa área del parque está en mucho mejor estado ahora de que antes de que yo comenzara”.

El cuidar la tierra es lo que Lall dice espera sea legado.

Dijo, “si eres bueno con la Madre Naturaleza, ella será buena contigo”.
