A group of Harlem seniors recently received a green-thumbed gift, as a backyard garden behind their supportive housing residence was renovated. On Wed., July 20, members of Rebuilding Together NYC and the West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing (WSFSSH) joined forces with volunteers from HSBC Bank to spruce up the backyard space at 29 West 126th Street. The WSFSSH-operated property features seven apartments for seniors with special needs. Volunteers removed weeds, trimmed hedges, planted flowers and assembled a picnic table for residents to use. Since 1980, WSFSSH has renovated or built 24 buildings in Manhattan and the Bronx that now house more than 1,800 people, mostly elderly, handicapped and special needs individuals. Angie Lantigua, WSFSSH’s Site Director for 29 West 126th Street, said the garden is intended to bring comfort to the tenants. “We try every year to maintain it,” she said. “But it’s difficult for the super to do it, so we bring in volunteers when the weather is nice.” For the first time, vegetables were also planted in the garden. “It’ll be a good way for residents to get their own fresh vegetables, and will even save them money at the store,” Lantigua said. Kelly Wilson, one of the 20 HSBC employees who helped fix up the garden, said his company participates in urban renewal projects on a quarterly basis. “We really want to contribute back to the city,” he remarked. “It’s a fantastic feeling.” “It’s very rewarding,” added Margie González, a 28-year HSBC employee. “It means so much to me to do this.” Also that day, Rebuilding Together NYC personnel helped spruce up another outdoor space adjoining a similar WSFSSH property on 120th Street. “This is part of our community renewal goal,” said Terry Scott, Director of Construction for Rebuilding NYC. “It’s about giving those in need a sense of pride about where they live.” Founded in 1999, Rebuilding Together NYC is a nonprofit that helps rehabilitate housing and provide free home and apartment repairs for low-income New Yorkers. Scott said his organization partners with several NYCHA properties and has also focused on repairing properties damaged by Hurricane Sandy. “We’ve fixed dozens of Sandy-damaged properties,” Scott said. “We’ll lay wood flooring, do drywall, tiles, kitchen cabinets, the whole nine yards.” “When the residents come in and see the finished product, their jaws drop,” said Scott. “That’s the best part of my job.” To learn more about Rebuilding Together NYC, visit www.rebuildingtogethernyc.org. Los voluntarios removieron maleza, sembraron flores y montaron una mesa de picnic para el uso de los residentes. Desde el 1980, WSFSSH ha renovado o construido 24 edificios en Manhattan y el Bronx que ahora albergan a más de 1,800 personas, mayormente envejecientes, incapacitados e individuos con necesidades especiales.
