Sweet and light
The Teen Leadership/Community Service group at the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood has learned more about the local senior population in the last month.
Among some of their discoveries was that, in one recent study, 43% of seniors reported feeling lonely on a regular basis.
That sparked their imaginations.
The teens came up with a special project aimed at making the lives of residents at the Y’s Wien House, a residential facility for low-income seniors, a little brighter and sweeter.
The group spent an evening baking cookies for the seniors.
Each baked treat was placed in a bag filled with special notes with positive messages such as “You Are Very Special,” “Be Happy,” and “You’re So Sweet.”
Dulce y ligero
Liderazgo para Adolescentes/Grupo de Servicio Comunitario en YM&YWHA de Washington Heights e Inwood aprendieron más sobre la población local de adultos mayores en el último mes.
Entre sus descubrimientos encontraron que, en un estudio reciente, el 43% de las personas mayores reportó sentirse sola de forma regular.
Eso desató su imaginación.
Los adolescentes pensaron en un proyecto especial destinado a mejorar la vida de los residentes en Y’s Wien House -un centro residencial para personas mayores de bajos ingresos- y que fuese un poco más brillante y dulce.
El grupo pasó una noche horneando galletas para los adultos mayores.
Cada delicia horneada fue colocada en una bolsa llena de notas especiales con mensajes positivos tales como “Usted es muy especial”, “Sea feliz” y “Es usted tan dulce”.
