Lillian Roberts, Executive Director of District Council 37 (DC 37) of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, has announced her retirement effective December 31, 2014.

Roberts, who served as DC 37 head for the past 13 years, is ending a 55-year career in the labor movement, which earned her the nickname “Lady of Steel.”

“It has been a great pleasure to serve the members of DC 37 and to have had the opportunity to lead this Council through some of our most turbulent times in history,” wrote Roberts in a letter to DC 37’s Executive Board.

“Although I am leaving the office of Executive Director, I will hold all of you and the members in my heart. I will always treasure those moments I spent working directly with members.”

Roberts has been involved with DC 37, currently New York City’s largest municipal union with more than 121,000 members, including thousands in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx, since the 1960’s.

A Chicago native, Roberts moved to New York City in 1965 to head up the union’s hospital division.

“What drew me to New York was the wonderful possibility of doing something to create a better society,” said Roberts at the time.

Upon her appointment as Associate Director in 1968, Roberts became second in command of the country’s public employee union, causing Essence magazine to refer to her as “probably the most influential black in American labor today.”

Roberts was known as a fierce and vocal representative when advocating for the union. She was jailed in 1969 for two weeks for openly defying then-Governor Nelson Rockefeller and leading a strike against three mental hospitals.

During her tenure at DC 37, the union’s ranks grew from 30,000 to 120,000.

Roberts left DC 37 in 1981 to become New York State labor commissioner, a post she held until 1987. She eventually returned to DC 37 and was named Executive Director in 2002.

The Executive Board of DC 37 has accepted Roberts’ recommendation to appoint Associate Director Henry Garrido as Executive Director, effective December 31.

Roberts, quien se desempeñó como cabeza del DC 37 durante los últimos 13 años, está terminando una carrera de 55 años en el movimiento obrero, que le valió el sobrenombre de “Dama de Acero”.

“Ha sido un gran placer servir a los miembros del DC 37 y tener la oportunidad de dirigir este Consejo a través de algunos de nuestros momentos más turbulentos “, escribió Roberts en una carta a la Junta Ejecutiva del DC 37.

“Aunque estoy dejando el cargo de directora ejecutiva, voy a mantenerlos a todos ustedes, y a los miembros, en mi corazón. Siempre atesoraré esos momentos que pasé trabajando directamente con los miembros”.

Roberts participó en el DC 37, actualmente el mayor sindicato municipal de la ciudad de Nueva York con más de 121,000 miembros – entre ellos miles de personas del norte de Manhattan y el Bronx – desde la década de 1960. Roberts dejó el DC 37 en 1981 para convertirse en comisionada del trabajo del estado de Nueva York, cargo que ocupó hasta 1987. Eventualmente regresó al DC 37 y fue nombrada directora ejecutiva en 2002.

La Junta Ejecutiva del DC 37 ha aceptado la recomendación de Roberts de nombrar al director asociado Henry Garrido como director ejecutivo, efectivo al 31 de diciembre.
