They’ll be packing.
On Fri., May 13th, public school students from District 6 and the Urban Arts Partnership will descend upon United Palace for the Annual Urban Arts Festival.
For the 12th consecutive year, the Urban Arts Festival will serve as a showcase event to celebrate the positive impact of the arts within schools and to display talents of local students.
This year’s theme is “Pack the Palace,” as the festival will attempt to fill every one of the historic theater’s 3,400 seats.
The event is run by Urban Arts Partnership, which sponsors arts-based education programs designed to close the achievement gap in public schools.
“The festival is our culminating event, which brings together the larger community to celebrate the academic and artistic achievements of Urban Arts Partnership students from around the city,” explained Katrena Perou, Chief Programming Officer.
All District 6 schools are either appearing on stage or bringing members from their school community to partake in the event, said Perou.
At “Urban Arts Festival: Pack The Palace,” English Language Learners (ELLs) will take the stage to share personal stories, said Perou, and Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer will be on hand to present awards to students, parents and teachers.
There will also be performances from students involved in Urban Arts Partnership programming, as well as United Palace of Cultural Arts, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Creative Art Works.
Perou credited District 6 Schools Superintendent Manny Ramírez with helping to make the United Palace event a reality.
“He opened up his office so that school leaders in his district and Urban Arts Partnership could meet on a monthly basis to plan the event,” explained Perou. “This event is truly for the community and planned by the community.”
This is the second year that Urban Arts Partnership has staged its annual festival at the United Palace, a venue that Perou said is ideal because its capacity allows many community members to attend.
The Urban Arts Partnership currently serves eight Washington Heights and Inwood schools through a variety of programs, including ELL support and “Fresh Prep,” a hip-hop based effort to help students pass their Regents exams. The organization also offers social justice after school programs that address community issues through the arts.
At a time when many school arts programs are being cut, the festival takes on even greater importance, Perou said.
“This event brings visibility to the arts and how it can successfully be the solution to support students and teachers with their academic goals,” commented Perou. “The answer is not to cut the arts, but to think about how they can be used to engage students by integrating arts into the core curriculum.”

El viernes 13 de mayo, estudiantes de las escuelas públicas del distrito 6 y la Asociación de Arte Urbano descenderán sobre el United Palace para el Festival Anual de Arte Urbano.
Por 12º año consecutivo, el Festival de Arte Urbano servirá como un evento de exhibición para celebrar el impacto positivo de las artes en las escuelas y mostrar el talento de los estudiantes locales.
El tema de este año es “Llenar el Palacio”, ya que el festival intentará ocupar cada uno de los 3,400 asientos del histórico teatro.
El evento es dirigido por la Asociación de Arte Urbano, que patrocina programas de educación artística diseñados para cerrar la brecha de aprovechamiento en las escuelas públicas.
“El festival es nuestro evento culminante, reúne a toda la comunidad para celebrar los logros académicos y artísticos de los estudiantes de la Asociación de Arte Urbano de toda la ciudad”, explicó Katrena Perou, directora de Programación.
Todas las escuelas del Distrito 6 están apareciendo en el escenario o aportando miembros de sus escuelas comunitarias para formar parte del evento, dijo Perou.
En el “Festival de Arte Urbano: llenar el Palacio”, los estudiantes del idioma inglés (ELLs por sus siglas en inglés) tomarán el escenario para compartir historias personales, dijo Perou, y la canciller de escuelas Carmen Fariña y la presidenta del condado de Manhattan, Gale Brewer, estarán presentes para entregar los premios a estudiantes, padres y profesores.
También habrá actuaciones de los estudiantes que participan en la programación de la Asociación de Arte Urbano, así como el United Palace de Artes Culturales, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater y Creative Works Art.
