Grammy-nominated Latin jazz drummer and composer Dafnis Prieto is no stranger to accolades.
The Cuban-born Prieto has been lauded with critical praise since coming to the United States in 1999.
With drumming techniques that are considered revolutionary, Prieto’s impact on the Latin jazz scene has been so profound that Modern Drummer magazine compared his arrival in New York to an asteroid hitting the city.
Despite such effusive acclaim, the unassuming Prieto insists that he is simply striving to improve his skills and create music.
And he is proud to call Northern Manhattan home.
“I like the cosmopolitan aspect of it, the variety of different cultures that I see,” said Prieto.
His frequent walks in Fort Tryon Park, soaking up the Hudson River views, help fuel his musical compositions.
“Being outside helps inspire my art,” he remarked.
Prieto obtained classical education at the National School of Music in Havana, and has refined his knowledge of Afro-Cuban music, jazz and world music since then.
“I was classically trained in Cuba for eight years,” said Prieto. “I gained a lot of knowledge from that and also the discipline of how to behave as a musician.”
He also developed a desire to share that music knowledge with others. For the past ten years, Prieto has taught at New York University, and conducts numerous drum clinics and workshops.
“Basically, I created my own way of teaching, because I’m self-taught on drums,” said Prieto.
“When I teach I’m not only focusing on drums and percussion, or even music itself,” he explained. “I’m trying to get students to apply everything that a human being needs to do to achieve their desired dream.”
Before learning to play a drum kit in his native Cuba, Prieto concentrated on bongos and congas. He enjoys playing a variety of percussion instruments, even some unusual ones, such as the frying pan attached to his current drum kit.
It was inspired by the Cuban traditions of carnivals and parades, where people walk around banging small cooking pans.
“I have one on my drum kit and I have a lot of fun with it,” Prieto said. “It has a very distinct sound.”
Prieto was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2007, and also received a Best New Artist nomination at that year’s Latin Grammy Awards.
“Being nominated for a Grammy really helped me get recognition, especially early in my career,” said Prieto.
Though he expressed ambivalence about the nominations themselves, Prieto acknowledged that they likely helped him build a wider audience.
“To musicians themselves, a Grammy doesn’t always mean that much,” he said, “but it does mean something to fans and others in the music business — they associate it with quality.”
In 2011, Prieto received a MacArthur Fellowship, which provides “no strings attached” monetary awards to support creative projects.
Recipients can use the fellowship money however they choose; Prieto has used his to support his touring endeavors and create his own record label, Dafnison Music.
A prolific composer, Prieto has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and for his own bands.
Prieto has also performed in the groups of Latin jazz luminaries Eddie Palmieri and Michel Camilo, as well as the avant-garde saxophonist Henry Threadgill.
Apprenticing with such polished bandleaders was a rewarding and educational experience.
“They are great human beings as well as great musicians,” said Prieto. “I’ve learned many things from them and they’ve all brought something different to my career. Playing with them was almost like going to school.”
Prieto has served at the helm of several groups, including the Dafnis Prieto Sextet and the Si o Si Quartet, which performed a recent show at the Flushing Town Hall in Queens.
In December, he will participate in a showcase titled “Latino Jazz All-Stars” at Lincoln Center.
Though playing gigs, teaching and writing songs is enough to keep Prieto busy, he is also looking forward to the release of his latest album, which he recently finished recording and is slated for a 2015 release.
“I’m really excited to share it with fans,” he said. “It’s all new music.”

El baterista de jazz latino y compositor nominado al Grammy, Dafnis Prieto, no es ajeno a los elogios.
Prieto, nacido en Cuba, ha recibido muy buenas críticas desde que llegó a Estados Unidos en el 1999.
Con técnicas de percusión consideradas revolucionarias, el impacto de Prieto en la escena del jazz latino ha sido tan profundo que la revista Modern Drummer comparó su llegada a Nueva York con un asteroide que golpeó la ciudad.
A pesar de los efusivos elogios, el modesto Prieto insiste en que él simplemente está tratando de mejorar sus habilidades y crear música.
Y se enorgullece de llamar hogar al norte de Manhattan.
“Me gusta su aspecto cosmopolita, las diferentes culturas que veo”, dijo Prieto.
Sus caminatas frecuentes en Fort Tryon Park, absorbiendo las vistas del río Hudson, ayudan a impulsar sus composiciones musicales.
“Estar al aire libre ayuda a inspirar mi arte”, remarcó.
Prieto recibió educación clásica en la Escuela Nacional de Música de La Habana, y ha perfeccionado su conocimiento de la música afrocubana, el jazz y música del mundo desde entonces.
“Tuve una formación clásica en Cuba durante ocho años”, dijo Prieto. “Adquirí mucho conocimiento y también la disciplina de cómo debe comportarse un músico”.
También desarrolló un deseo de compartir ese conocimiento musical con los demás. Durante los últimos diez años, Prieto ha enseñado en la Universidad de Nueva York y dirige numerosas clínicas y talleres de batería.
“Básicamente he creado mi propia forma de enseñar, porque soy autodidacta en la batería”, dijo Prieto.
“Cuando enseño no sólo estoy concentrado en la batería y las percusiones, o incluso en la música misma”, explicó. “Intento que los estudiantes apliquen todo lo que un ser humano necesita hacer para lograr sus sueños”.
Antes de aprender a tocar la batería en su Cuba natal, Prieto se concentró en los bongos y las congas. Él disfruta tocar varios instrumentos de percusión, incluso algunos inusuales como una sartén atada a su batería actual.
Se inspira en las tradiciones cubanas de carnavales y desfiles, donde la gente camina golpeando pequeñas sartenes de cocina.
“Tengo una en mi batería y me divierto mucho con ella”, explicó. “Tiene un sonido muy distinto”.
Prieto fue nominado para un Grammy por Mejor Álbum de Jazz Latino en 2007, y también recibió una nominación a Mejor Artista Nuevo en los Premios Grammy Latinos de ese año.
“Estar nominado para un Grammy realmente me ayudó a obtener reconocimiento, sobre todo al principio de mi carrera”, señaló.
A pesar de que expresó ambivalencia sobre las mismas nominaciones, Prieto reconoció que probablemente lo ayudaron a construir un público más amplio.
“Para los músicos, un Grammy no siempre significa tanto”, comentó, “pero sí significa algo para los fans y los otros en el negocio de la música; lo asocian con calidad”.
En 2011, Prieto recibió una beca MacArthur que establece premios monetarios “sin condiciones” para apoyar proyectos creativos.
Los beneficiarios pueden utilizar el dinero de la beca de la forma que elijan, y Prieto lo ha utilizado para apoyar sus esfuerzos de gira y crear su propio sello discográfico: Dafnison Music.
Un compositor prolífico, Prieto ha creado música para danza, cine, de cámara y para sus propias bandas.
También ha tocado en los grupos de las luminarias del jazz latino Eddie Palmieri y Michel Camilo, así como con el saxofonista de vanguardia Henry Threadgill.
Ser aprendiz de esos pulidos directores de orquesta fue una experiencia gratificante y educativa.
“Son grandes seres humanos y grandes músicos”, señaló Prieto. “Aprendí muchas cosas de ellos y todos brindaron algo diferente a mi carrera. Tocar con ellos fue casi como ir a la escuela”.
Prieto ha estado a la cabeza de varios grupos, incluyendo el sexteto Dafnis Prieto y el cuarteto Si o Si, que llevó a cabo un reciente espectáculo en el Ayuntamiento de Flushing, en Queens.
En diciembre, participará en una exhibición titulada “Latino Jazz All Stars” en el Lincoln Center.
Tocar conciertos, enseñar y escribir canciones es suficiente para mantener ocupado a Prieto. También espera con interés el lanzamiento de su último álbum, que recientemente terminó de grabar y está programado para su lanzamiento en 2015.
“Estoy muy emocionado de compartir con los fans”, dijo. “Es toda música nueva”.
